COMIC-CON: The Movie is making waves in the geek community, but a lot are wondering how the heck they’re going to get to see it given its limited release. Fortunately, Mashable has some info that’ll help you help the movie.

Morgan Spurlock’s latest film may not have the mass appeal of a flick like Hunger Games — but he still wants fans to have the chance to experience it on the big screen.

The film, Comic-Con Episode IV: A Fan’s Hope chronicles the cultural phenomenon that is San Diego Comic-Con. It profiles five attendees at the 2010 show.

Comic-Con Episode IV: A Fan’s Hope hits video-on-demand on April 6, 2012. Starting on April 5, the film will make its way to select theaters across the country.

Still, Spurlock knows that won’t be enough to sate the appetite of Comic-Con fans. That’s why the director has teamed up with the startup Tugg to have fans rally to bring the film to their town.

Tugg is like a Kickstarter for movie theaters. Fans agree to buy tickets in advance; in return, they get an extra-special movie experience. Users can buy ticket bundles that include autographed memorabilia, DVDs or Blu-ray and more.

For Spurlock’s Comic-Con documentary, Tugg is giving fans a chance to bring the film to any city they want. Big or small, get enough people to commit and Comic-Con the movie can come to your theater!

For fans in 7 cities across the country, Spurlock will actually show up to host a Q&A with viewers and fans. Those Q&A cities include:

Orlando, FL
Miami, FL
Baltimore, MD
Milford, CT
Las Vegas, NV
Westbury, NY
Atlanta, GA
(The Atlanta screening is at my favorite hometown theater, AMC Phipps Plaza 14. ATL fans, show your support!)

In addition to regular tickets, fans can get special ticket combos that include the DVD or Deluxe DVD, a Morgan Spurlock lithograph and even action figures of Stan Lee and Harry Knowles — who are featured in the film. The Tugg campaign is presented by Morgan, Wrekin Hill and NECA.

Making the Movie Experience More Social

As I have long argued, movies are an inherently social experience. The reality is, however, that the changing nature of content creation and distribution realities means that not every film can be screened in a theater.

Spurlock realizes that, and he told Mashable that as a documentary filmmaker, he accepts that some of his films will be viewed more frequently on a smaller screen than at the cineplex. That doesn’t mean that these stories can’t be told on the big screen.

This is why we think the partnership with Tugg makes so much sense. Tugg is a service that was created because of a love for cinema — as well as the understanding that movie fans can make a difference in helping their local theater chains. Comic-Con Episode IV: A Fan’s Hope is just the latest film to use Tugg as a platform for getting movie goers into theater seats. The intended audience for this film — movie lovers, comic book geeks and fans of Spurlock — are a perfect fit for the site and its mission.

If you happen to live in cities such as Austin, Los Angeles or New York, it’s easy to find theaters that play older cult or classic films; Tugg’s mission is to bring that experience elsewhere.

THE NEW YORK COMIC CON BEGINS TODAY! I’m on my way there to check it all out and see everything from the costumes to the sales tables to the celebrities that are sure to show. It attracted about 77,000 people last year, so I’m pretty excited to see what the crowds are like at the Javits Center once I get down there. Naturally, I’ll be sure to take plenty of pictures and show ’em off once I get myself back home!

But that’s not the only Con news out there! There’s something else that should make a lot of geeks rejoice! I know it’s how I felt when I heard the news from the LA Times

Comic-Con International is staying in San Diego, and a press conference is scheduled for Friday at the San Diego Convention Center where local leaders will symbolically wipe the worried sweat from their collective brow and pat one another on the back for saving the day and keeping the civic bonanza in the city where it was born more than 40 years ago.

But was there every really a chance that Comic-Con was going to pack up its cape and leave for Los Angeles, Anaheim, or even Las Vegas, as had been rumored? Some critics said that the public hand-wringing was pure kabuki that was all about getting a better deal, not planing a divorce.

In a press release, the organizefs of Comic-Con said that a deal to keep the event at the San Diego Convention Center through 2012 has now been extended to 2015.

“We are grateful for the tireless efforts all three cities put into to their proposals,” said David Glanzer, Comic-Con’s director of marketing and public relations. “In the end, we feel this decision is the best for all those who attend Comic-Con and for the organization itself. We are happy that the community has worked with us to ensure that we remain here.”

Comic-Con was first held in 1970 at San Diego’s U.S. Grant Hotel, where it attracted 300 people.

We’re getting in even more SDCC exclusives, straight from July’s Comic Con to our shelves! If you weren’t able to hit up the Comic Con this year, then make sure to check our New Arrivals section for every new release that comes in. And for now, here’s the profile of one of the items we recently added to our stock, direct from the Con! It’s a Generation One-style Transformer that’s sure to please fans of the massive franchise.

You may want to look again, because what you thought was just a retro boombox is actually a “ROBOT IN DISGUISE!” Hasbro is excited to offer Comic-Con International attendees its TRANSFORMERS AUTOBOT BLASTER Special Edition figure. Designed in the character’s classic 1984 styling, this special AUTOBOT BLASTER figure includes its three cassette tapes/battle companions: STEELJAW, RAMHORN and EJECT.

Gears of War: Film Confirmed + A New Figure!

Good news for Gears of War fans! From the UK’s Electronic Theatre comes an article on the confirmation of a film version of the hugely successful video game property:

Long rumoured as in production, Microsoft has today confirmed the existence of a Gears of War feature film, almost inadvertently. While announcing that Ice-T would lend his voice talents to the upcoming Gears of War 3, the publisher issued an official statement confirming the existence of a movie based upon the franchise.

While there have been many rumours, with the reported screenwriter openly acknowledging the existence of a movie adaptation of the Gears of War franchise, no official confirmation that a film had been green lit has ever been received from Microsoft, Epic Games or any other party involved with the production. Today however, that all changed.

The press release issued earlier today revealing the vocal talents of Ice-T as Griffin, a new character in Gears of War 3, also offered the first official acknowledgement that a motion-picture based upon the franchise is currently underway.

“The “Gears of War” series is one of the most popular franchises in Xbox history, having sold more than 12 million copies worldwide, and spawning New York Times best-selling novels, an upcoming film and more,” read the press release, proud of the achievements of Epic Games’ popular videogame series.

And if that isn’t enough good news, the San Diego Comic Con figure of Gears of War 3’s Jace has now been revealed and we’ve got it available for pre-order in case you can’t make it to the con. He stands about 6 inches and comes with game-faithful weapons. But most impressively, I think, is the sculpting, which is a startlingly realistic look, but still manages to capture the style of the game. Really great.

He joing a bunch of other Gears of War figures, from 6-inch figures to Batsus to a ton of multi-packs and exclusives. Check ’em out!

Missed the Con? Get your Exclusives here!

I was fortunate enough to attend this year’s San Diego Comic Con and I excitedly picked up a couple of Con exclusives to add to my toy collection. But even attendees can’t be everywhere at once and the exclusives tend to vanish from the booths pretty quickly. Fortunately, though, I’m not in charge of CmdStore’s acquisitions and thus my inability to snag all the exclusive items hasn’t stopped us from boasting an awesome selection of SDCC 09 goodies that you can check out right here.

Some examples of the items we’ve got in-stock include the above Han and Luke Stormtrooper 2-pack, Crimson Cobra Commander, Metal Sonic the Hedgehog, Pesty and Creo Little Apple Dolls, Green Lantern Blackest Night and Origins figures, Egon Spengler and Slimer, 12-inch Baroness, the Destro 2-pack and more!
