Batman is a character very close to DC Comics writer David Finch. Of the bat hero, he has said: “He’s very driven and black and white. I love that in a world of so much grey he can cut through it with so much clarity. Right or wrong, he never has to question. And there’s something very engaging about a character that pushes his limits and never surrenders. There are so many variables and possibilities in a story, but you always know what Batman will do.” We’re guessing that back in the ’80s, a similar sentiment propelled writer Frank Miller to ink the now-iconic comic Batman: The Dark Knight Returns.
In a statue depiction of Bruce Wayne’s life in crime-ridden Gotham City after he reverses his decision to retire, the comic-book series Batman: The Dark Knight Returns is highlighted for its macabre yet good-guy-championing aesthetic. As this series sees Batman’s psyche developed and explored amidst the gloomy background of evil and misdoing, there’s always at least a sliver of hopeful light at the side seams. Capture this feeling with this stunning “Call to Arms” statue, which sees Batman mounted on a bucking, black steed to honor the Year of the Horse. Measuring 14 inches tall, it is available only in a limited run of 1,000. Reserve yours now.

A new mini-statue from DC Direct shows All-Star Batman and Robin ready to leap off a Gotham rooftop and it’s absolutely awesome. Firstly, the 5-inch height makes the brilliant sculpting and design all the more impressive when you look at what they’ve done. And secondly, it’s a tip of the hat to All-Star Batman and Robin the Boy Wonder, one of the most divisive Batman books ever published. Made out of cold-cast porcelain, the statue joins a ton others from DC Direct, including DC Universe Online items, Cover Girls of the DC Universe, Hot Toys Dark Knight busts and many, many more!
Long before it was a tired meme and some time before it was a fresh meme, “This is Sparta!” was just the awesomest line to be found in Frank Miller’s 300, a film about muscular men directed by Zack Snyder and starring the then-lesser-known Gerard Butler as Sparta’s King Leonidas.
This guy’s already been a 6-inch figure along with some of the other characters from the film, but Sideshow knew that a mere 6 inches could not contain him and thus are releasing a 12-inch model. Check it out:
Here’s a look at the features:
The King Leonidas 12 inch Figure features:
* Over 26 points of articulation
* Authentic likeness of Gerard Butler as King Leonidas
* Switch-out head with alternate expression
* Real fabric cape with harness
* Faux-leather belt, vambraces and greaves
* Helmet features a realistic faux-horsehair crest
* Realistic wolf’s tooth necklace
* Sword and faux-leather scabbard
* Battle damaged Spartan shield with faux-leather handle and removable broken arrows
* Two (2) pairs of Interchangeable hands
* Figure stand with 300 movie logo and King Leonidas nameplate
This one’s a great find for anyone who couldn’t get enough of the film, or any fan of the absolutely insane abs that distracted from 300’s admittedly exciting historical inaccuracies.
Though far from my favourite Batman yarn, few can deny the impact made by Frank Miller’s ‘The Dark Knight Returns’ on the Batman fandom. From the striking art to the complex and gritty plotlines and characters, TDKR was a huge book in its time and continues to influence the way people write about Batman today. And since, at the time, such books came with far fewer forms of merchandising, there were few collectibles made available until much later.
This new set is among them.
Featuring repaints of the distinctive Dark Knight Returns Joker and Batman, this 2-pack of arch-rivals is a great-looking tribute to the graphic novel. The Joker’s grim red lips and the rage etched on Batman’s face have been lifted flawlessly from the book’s pages and make a fine addition to the shelf of any fan or DC Direct collector. They stand about 6 inches tall and come with a prestige, 48-page reprint of the original work.
And for more Batman, check out Batman Tattoos, a blog showcasing any and all bat-tats that their bearers want to offer up. Some are amazing, some will make you shake your head and others are just plain weird, but all are Batman. Take a look. I’ve posted a personal favourite below; click it to visit the site.

Adapted from the legendary comic strip,WILL EISNER’S THE SPIRIT is a classic action-adventure-romance told by genre-twister Frank Miller (creator of 300 and SIN CITY.) Jackson) has a different mission: he’s going to wipe out Spirit’s beloved city as he pursues his own version of immortality. The Spirit tracks this cold-hearted killer from Central City’s rundown warehouses, to the damp catacombs, to the windswept waterfront all the while facing a bevy of beautiful women who either want to seduce, love or kill our masked crusader.
