2011: A Rough Year for DC Women

Over at the phenomenal blog DC Women Kicking Ass, there’s a great, if depressing, countdown of the unpleasantness (and outright disrespect) that has been the fate of many of DC’s women in this, the year of the reboot.

If you’re a fan of DC Comics, if you believe in equality or if you just want to keep your finger on the pulse and know which DC women are kicking ass when, then you should definitely check this out. It’s a great list and might hold the key to pinpointing exactly what has to change in 2012, as we move closer to a comicverse that is as inclusive as possible.

7 Movies You Didn’t Know Were Rip-Offs

There’s a great article over at Cracked.com that sheds some light on a few not-so-coincidental similarities between some well-known films and their lesser-known inspirations. My personal favourite is the comparison between Monkey Island and Pirates of the Caribbean, but it’s also great to read about where The Matrix, Black Swan and even Reservoir Dogs may have gotten their start. Check it out!

Danzaversary, Polarrhoids and In-Flight Flight: Superuseless Superpowers

SUPERUSELESS SUPERPOWERS is a blog that looks at the most mundane of superpowers and presents them to you as a handy guide.

Float like a butterfly and sting like the bedside manner of Mother Teresa. As a superhero, sometimes you have to resort to violence. Too bad your ferocious fists instantly heal the damage you inflict. Whereas most punches would deliver a crushing Ivan Drago-like knockout. Yours leave your opponent feeling amazingly refreshed and rejuvenated. At least until he counters with an uppercut to your oesophagus.

How do you get from this…

to THIS?

The answer is simple: you head down to The Covered Blog and check out a ton of remixed, reinterpreted comic book covers from every era! Some old covers have been given a modern styling and some of the newer ones get the retro treatment (see this great rendering of Milk and Cheese). It’s a great blog with amazing contributors and well worth the visit!

BLOG REC: Hyperbole and a Half

Chances are you’ve already read something from today’s blog recommendation, Hyperbole and a Half. Perhaps you’ve seen the ‘Alot’ entry or the harrowing tale of a young girl and an ill-fated fish or read a bit about social awkwardness. If you have, there’s really almost no doubt that you’ve laughed out loud or at least snickered quietly at your desk, trying to go unnoticed as you enjoyed some of the most hilarious writing available online.

If you haven’t seen it, though, here’s a link. Read the entries, look at the absolutely amazing MS Paint art and just enjoy.

Coming Soon: The Return of HardCore Nerdity!

The premiere social network for geeks, Hardcore Nerdity has been down for some time, needing to upgrade its servers to properly accommodate the teeming masses in desperate need of their nerd fix.

Well, finally, it seems to be on its way back! A site-wide e-mail and a pre-Fan-Expo message posted on their main page suggests that the long wait is nearly at an end and fans can expect the return of Jonathan Llyr’s magnum opus very, very soon!

What has it been like to live two full months without our beloved HcN? Well, we got to know our loved ones better, took our precious puppy out for a walk and rediscovered the glory that is “fresh air”. We went to family gatherings, played sports, maybe even went for a swim. We saw movies, we read books, we dusted off that unfinished model of the Millenium Falcon and now it’s slightly less unfinished.

But fear not, oh loyal HcNers, your living torment is close to an end.

For HcN is returning soon! How soon? Like . . . dude . . . really soon. But all great things are worth the wait, and we would be remiss in giving you a site that was only half its potential. So some final tweaks are being twacked, and nits are being picked.

“I don’t trust you!” you say. “You have deserted us. How can we believe a word you say??”

Believe it my friends, believe it. For here we have proof – a screen cap of the new and improved and snazzy HcN:

Adding to that we are still hard at work gathering super awesome content for the site, and will be present at FanExpo this weekend like every year so do seek us out!

In the immortal words of the great Douglas Adams: Don’t panic. And in the even more immortal words of the Governor of California: We’ll be back. And when we’re back, you’d better believe we’ll be driving that truck through the wall in style.

Thanks for visiting Hardcorenerdity.com. Stay tuned!
