SHE-RA Comes to DVD! Plus, PANTHOR!

November 8, 2010

The Masters of the Universe is a huge franchise and the years haven’t seen anybody forgetting it as it sees a revival in the form of action figures and collectibles hitting shelves everywhere. But what’s more, the original TV series is hitting DVD and Blu-Ray so you can enjoy seeing the heroes and villains duking it out in good old 80s animated glory! SHE-RA will soon be joining the rerelease ranks and Newsok.com has the info!

She-Ra, one of the most popular animated heroines of the 1980s, turns 25 in 2010, and the first 20 episodes of “She-Ra: Princess of Power” are available on DVD. Actress Melendy Britt, who played She-Ra and her alter ego, Adora, recently reminisced about the 93-episode series.

The fantasy series was a spinoff from “Masters of the Universe,” which featured He-Man; She-Ra was He-Man’s sister. She fought the forces of Hordak on the world of Etheria.

She-Ra was one of the premiere female heroes on television at the time, and Britt said her theater experience helped her with the dual role.

“Some things in life are just fated or meant to be,” she said. “I was trained in theater, and I did the classics. Shakespeare and Chekhov. Some of these characters were larger than life. So I was very accustomed to the stage and being larger than life.”

Adora, the secret identity of She-Ra, drew inspiration from a Shakespearean character, for example.

“Her innocence was a bit like Juliet in ‘Romeo and Juliet,’” she said. But She-Ra was perhaps more universal.

“It was a feeling that I had that I wanted to be able to express power and wisdom and kindness and love in a voice,” Britt said. “And that’s how she evolved.”

Even though She-Ra was an adventure program, it often shared a positive message and included moral lessons in the epilogue. Britt revealed one tale that had real-life heroic implications.

In one show’s epilogue, He-Man and She-Ra told young viewers to be sure to tell an adult if they were touched in an inappropriate way.
“She-Ra says to the children, ‘It’s your body. No one should touch you in a way that you feel is wrong.’ And He-Man chimed in and said, ‘It may be hard to tell someone, but do tell.’”

Britt said producers subsequently received a letter from a parent of a child who had been molested. The child had been in therapy but had until then refused to reveal the name of the perpetrator.

“But when she heard her heroine She-Ra tell her to tell, she began to open up,” Britt said. “And to have been instrumental in that kind of help and justice was just monumental to me.”

And there’s more! Because if you’re looking to add to your MOTU collection, then you can start looking forward to March 2011, when a new exclusive will be shipping out! Take a look:

At a scale made for 6-inch figures to ride, Panthor features some brilliant sculpting and a retro-styled mask. He’s yet another addition to the massive (and growing!) collection and you can pre-order him now to receive in a few short months! Or, check out the complete Masters of the Universe collection!

Battlestar Galactica: Modern & Classic Cylons

December 2, 2009

The Modern and Classic Cylons are both available in a new 2-pack from the folks at NECA for their massive Battlestar Galactica collection. These guys stand about 7 inches tall, feature some very impressive sculpting and design and  are pre-orders right now, shipping in April 2010;  they’re definitely worth a second look if you’re a BSG fan. Also available from the 2-pack section pre-orders are the Tigh and Gaeta and Starbuck and Leoben packs.

We’ve also got single 6-inch figures from Baltar to Six, Titanium reproductions of the futuristic vehicles seen in the show and, for a more lighthearted take on what was one of the darkest sci-fi shows to date, take a look at the Battlestar Mini-Mates!

All of the items are a great way to commemorate a series that many still miss–despite the fan fervor surrounding the spin-off, Caprica.

Battlestar Galactica: Upcoming figures!

May 19, 2009

Battlestar Galactica may have come to an end (paving the way for the Caprica prequel), but the figures based on the hugely popular show are still available and yet more are being released later this year, showing that you can never keep a good sci-fi epic down. Joining figures of characters like Caprica Six, Brendan Costanza and Lee “Apollo” Adama are two new sets in August and September 2009.

The first set, shipping in August but available for pre-order, contains Admiral Adama, President Roslin, Helena Cain and President Lee Adama. And in September, look for more figures to arrive in-stock and help you get through those tough Friday nights without BSG!

“Push the bloody button, Brutha!”: LOST Blogs and Figures

May 15, 2009

If you’re a fan of ABC’s LOST and can’t seem to figure out what you’re going to do with yourself until 2010 when the show returns, we’ve got a couple suggestions in the forms of two in-depth Lost Blogs on Livejournal and a line of figures that are sure to make the wait just a little bit easier.

First of all, we’ve got Whitebrowgigs’ Blog, where you’ll not only find entertaining tales of his daily life, but a glut of geekery and the most details Lost blogs out there. Informally titled “Push the Bloody Button, Brutha!”, his lost postings are an incredible feat. Not only do they include night-of screencaps and witty commentary, but there’s a section for every little detail you might have missed, references to previous episodes, links to further information about whatever clues LOST has left behind and (my personal favourite part) a “by numbers” guide of every episode, including stuff like:

- During Kate’s flashback, a 6 pack of beer was $4.00
- Sawyer’s parents were killed when he was 8.
- Hurley had $227 in cash when he got arrested. 2*7=14 + 2= 16.

It’s truly the most comprehensive guide to the series I’ve seen yet and if you’ve got a Livejournal or an OpenID, you can post comments to get in on the spectulative action. Definitely a must-read for fans of the series who can’t get enough of the mystery.

For a more group-oriented approach, and a lot more Lost-gossip and honest-to-God “squee-ing” and related gossip or info, look no further than the Oh No They Didn’t! spin-off community, ONTD_LOST. From Attack of the Show videos to animated gifs and clips, you’ll find everything to satisfy the more fun-loving part of your Lost-love.

And finally, if you’d prefer a more hands-on way to bring LOST into your home, our online store offers a selection of LOST figures from the wizards over at McFarlane. Check ‘em out! Series one includesJack, Locke, Hurley, Shannon, Kate, Charlie and the Mysterious Hatch while series two includes Jin, Sun, Sawyer and Mr. Eko.
