Black Panther Movie in the works

January 24, 2011

Article by by Borys Kit from The Hollywood Reporter.

Black Panther MovieBlack Panther is back in development at Marvel Studios.

The company has hired Mark Bailey, who hails from the documentary film world, to pen a take on the character, the king of a resource-rich fictional African country who becomes a super hero. Marvel’s Kevin Feige is producing.

The Black Panther first appeared in the pages of the Fantastic Four comic in 1966 and is considered the first black hero in mainstream comics. A movie version was in development at Columbia in the early 1990s with Wesley Snipes on board to star in an Indiana Jones-style adventure.

Snipes remained attached to Panther even when the property transferred to Artisan Entertainment, best known for making The Blair Witch Project. At the time it had several Marvel films in development.

Marvel reacquired the rights to Panther in 2005 when it absorbed a host of character licenses from Lionsgate, which bought Artisan in 2003.

On a certain level, Bailey is an odd choice to write an a Black Panther movie. The scribe’s credits include stints as a writer or story editor on hard-hitting HBO documentaries such as Pandemic: Facing AIDS and Ghost of Abu Ghraib. His most recent project, being developed by Chockstone Productions, is a feature adaptation of the non-fiction book The Last of the Tribe: The Epic Quest to Save a Lone Man in the Amazon, to which Doug Liman (The Bourne Identity) is attached to direct.

But going against the grain has been a long-standing tradition for Marvel when developing its characters (remember the puzzlement by watchful fans when Alvin Sargent, the writer of Ordinary People, was tapped to write a Spider-Man movie?) and Bailey, repped by CAA, brings realism and grittiness to the project.

VALKYRIE vs. GREEN HULK

December 30, 2010

The Valkyrie vs. Green Hulk 2-pack has arrived in our Marvel Legends Face-Off Twin Packs collection! The 6-inch Valkyrie figure, which comes with the weaponry you would expect in the capable hands of an Asgardian warrior woman, stands off against the monstrous Hulk!

Empowered and driven mad by Asgardian magic, Samantha Parrington attacked the Hulk. The fight that resulted was a battle for the ages. For blocks around, concrete was shattered by the concussive force of their blows. Both combatants staggered away from that fight with little memory of what had actually occurred. Later, as Samantha gained full control of her incredible powers, she joined the Hulk as a member of the Defenders.

Two New Marvel Bishoujo Statues: Red and Green Phoenix

September 10, 2010

Following in the footsteps of our post about the Psylocke Bishoujo statue pre-order comes a new pair of in-stock Marvel Bishoujo items: Green Phoenix and a truly impressive, dark variant, the Red Phoenix. Both figures stand about 9 inches tall, at a 1:8 scale with the other Marvel Bishoujo collectibles. Check ‘em out!

An elemental force of fire and life, the Phoenix found a suitable host template in Jean Grey, the X-Man known as Marvel Girl. When Grey seemingly sacrificed herself to save her teammates the alien entity took her place and started a whole new heroic chapter in the saga of the Phoenix. Now for the first time Phoenix is presented in the Japanese Bishoujo (pretty girl) style based on original character art by illustrator Shunya Yamashita.

The Dark Phoenix is a whole new take on the most dynamic Marvel x Bishoujo beauty yet! Floating down out of the sky, she rests on one foot in a magnificent base consisting of a swirling cyclone of flame. With her leg pointed and her arms above her head, the Dark Phoenix is stretched to show off the amazing curves of her slender body while her flaming hair seems to erupt from her head. Wearing an alternate costume in brilliant metallic red and gold, the Dark Phoenix looks too hot to handle.Translucent materials used on various body parts and the flame base further add to the perfect likeness and essence of the character, as does the wicked grin on her Bishoujo-styled face.
