COLONEL HANS LANDA: The Sideshow Figure

October 6, 2010

The Nazi Colonel Hans Landa was one of the most compelling figures in Quentin Tarantino’s Inglorious Basterds and swiftly became a fan favourite. Since the film, Christoph Waltz’ North American profile has been raised pretty high and he’s gotten a number of roles in American productions where most of his previous work was German or otherwise European. The Oscar helps, too.

But if you’re into the film or the character, you’re going to be very pleased with Sideshow’s expert, high-detail take on Landa, who not only looks great but comes with a bunch of accessories and features. You can pre-order the 12-inch figure now and it’ll be shipping in the first quarter of 2011. Homeless Doll “Gwen” an insult?

October 5, 2009

When I first heard about American Girl’s ‘homeless’ doll, Gwen, I thought very little of it. A character whose parents fall on difficult times and end up living in the car, I figured she was a sensitive look at a growing problem and, perhaps naively, assumed that Gwen was created in conjunction with a charity or organization that would help the real homeless.

Apparently, I was wrong. Gwen instead carries a $95 price tag and none of the proceeds go to helping anyone but toy giant Mattel. Naturally, this hasn’t gone over well with a lot of people who feel American Girl is showing themselves to be tremendously irresponsible and downright insulting.

The Telegraph reports…

Many US companies have found a way to profit from the recession, but the release of “Gwen,” based on a character who lives in a shelter, has caused howls of outrage.

Gwen is part of the increasingly popular American Girls line and costs $95 (£60) which considerably more than the average homeless person can typically afford to spend.

But American Girl dolls are extremely popular and have become the most sought-after toys among girls from ages four and up.

The doll is made by Mattel, a Wisconsin-based company which “celebrates girls and all they can be”, and is typically known for its iconic dolls that reflect periods in American History.

“What message is being sent with Gwen?” said New York Post columnist Andrea Peyser. “For starters, men are bad. Fathers abandon women without cause. She’s also telling me that women are helpless.”

The dolls send the wrong message to children, argued Tanya Tull, president of Beyond Shelter. She said she was “afraid that they’re going to pick up the idea that it’s OK, that it’s an accepted segment of society that some children are homeless and some children are not.”

But Herb Smith, president of the Los Angeles Mission for the homeless, said. “”I think it’s really a good idea, because homelessness affects everybody, at different economic levels. I actually think it’s a good teaching tool.

American Girl said the dolls “offer valuable lessons about life,” and that it was “disheartened that there has been any confusion over our fictional characters.” The company conceded that no proceeds from sales of Gwen and related offerings went directly to help the homeless.
