Cover Girls of the DC Universe: Power Girl and Batgirl

July 15, 2010

Power Girl as drawn by Adam Hughes comes to tangible life in this new DC Direct 12-inch statue from their Cover Girls of the DC Universe (see the whole collection of DC statues and collectibles here). The nuances of his art (originally for the cover of POWER GIRL #2) are really impressively rendered here, from the curves of the fabric in her cape to the arches in her dark eyebrows and the way her hair moves in the wind. A beautiful piece by one of the most talented artists around. She’s available for pre-order now and will be shipping in September, so be ready if you want to snag this one!

And continuing with the Hughes/DC stuff, November brings another of the DC Universe’s women when a new Batgirl statue arrives. Shown untangling her grappling hook with all the heroism of a 50s pin-up, she’s not exactly the brash, bold Power Girl above, nor is she much of a dignified entry to the Bat-family. Frankly, I’d like to see a statue of Batman immortalised with a coquettish look and a fouled-up tool from his utility belt, but I think I’ll have to wait on that. For now, here’s a look at the 12-inch statue!

Just in time for Valentine’s Day: Joker and Harley Quinn Figure Set

February 11, 2010

Happy Valentine’s Day!

Single or coupled up, this might actually be the best way to celebrate love this February 14th or beyond: a set including the most twisted love story ever to appear in DC Comics (although I did once pick up a comic in which Clayface fell for a mannequin…), Harley Quinn and The Joker.

Featuring repaints of the best-slash-most-popular figures of the two (DCU Harley and Alex Ross’ Joker), the set is sure to find a place in the hearts and on the shelves of anyone who has appreciated the love that was was born on the awesome animated series in the 90s.

Better yet, the pair comes with Paul Dini and Bruce Timm’s Eisner Award-winning graphic novel, MAD LOVE, which provides a glimpse into the depths of insanity, obsession and backwards affection that has come to define the pairing. Years ago, some might have scoffed at the suggestion of introducing a sidekick for the Clown Prince of Crime, but ever since Harley first appeared, it’s felt like she was there the whole time. Check out this set and pick it up for your puddin’ today!

Featured Figures: DC Universe Series 11 & 12

January 12, 2010

The DC Universe line seems the counterpoint to the Marvel Legends or Marvel Select collections. A collection of 6-inch figures of characters from the company’s storied history, it pleases those whose tastes run mainstream as well as the kind of die-hard fans seeking out a more obscure hero or villain. The line’s been coming fast and furious, rare for any toy company, but while we wait hopefully and optimistically for a thirteenth series, we’re pleased to say we’ve got both eleven and twelve. Here’s a run-down of what you can expect from each.

Like the Marvel Legends, the DCU collection has gone with the build-a-figure angle, packaging each individual 6-inch toy with single piece of a much larger figure. For series 11, it’s the tough-as-nails, swine-faced Green Lantern trainer Kilowog, who most recently featured in the DC event, Blackest Night. The Green Lantern drill sergeant has actually been around since 1986, but he’s a character who hasn’t exactly gotten his due and that makes it all the better that this line includes him. As for the figures themselves, though, you’ll find John Stewart’s Green Lantern, The Shark, Cyborg Superman, Steppenwolf (and variant), Katma Tui, All-Star Flash, The Question, Deadman (and variant), a short-haired Superman and grey and black Batman. A couple of those are still pre-orders, but check ‘em out right here in our DCU section.

Unlike Kilowog, Darkseid needs little introduction. One of the most significant villains in the DC Universe, it is only fitting that his massive size see him as the build-a-figure for the twelfth series. The supervillain is here composed of parts sealed with Dr. Mid-Nite, Metal Men’s Iron, Copperhead, Desaad, Eclipso, Mary Batson, Spectre and Power Girl. A varied line, it’s definitely one that caters primarily to the old-school fans, but everything about the design is slick and modern. Definitely worth a look.

And finally, we’ve also got a trio of figures that super-sizes the DCU collection: Giants of Justice (see bottom). The first three in this new off-shoot of the brand are The Flash, Batman and Killer Croc.

DC Universe Series 11: BAF Kilowog!

December 23, 2009

DC Universe fans will be pleased to know that the latest series of figures has now arrived! Series 11 brings together ten amazingly sculpted and painted figures from DC Direct, capturing the likenesses of characters both famous and infamous. John Stewart’s Green Lantern, Deadman, The Question, Cyborg Superman and a bunch of others have never looked better than they do in this awesome collection!

And even better, each figure in the set comes with a piece of this series’ Build-a-Figure Kilowog,  the tough but kind trainer of new Green Lantern recruits.

Be sure to check ‘em out, along with the previously-released figures in the DCU collection

Re-stock Alert! DC Universe Series 9 is BACK!

September 14, 2009

Back by popular demand, Series 9 of the DC Universe collection from DC Direct has been re-stocked and is back on our shelves. So if you were waiting on your favourite member of the series 9 crew, your time has come.

Wildcat, Green Arrow, Black Canary, Deadshot and The Flash are just a few of the figures in this collection of DC Heroes and Villains. Each toy comes with one piece of the massive Build-a-Figure. This time out, you can construct a terrifying rendering of the the toxic menace, Chemo. Doing so, of course, means that you will be joining the ranks of the most terrifying supervillains of all time, but as long as you’re prepared, we can supply you.

The one exception to the re-stock is the comic version of DC’s MANTIS. But never fear! Though he hasn’t yet arrived, we’re expecting a new shipment next week!

DC Universe: Series 9 Pre-orders!

June 5, 2009

The hugely successful Marvel Legends line was likely the final kick in the pants DC needed to take a run at the high-quality action figure market and unleash the DC Universe Collection. And now, the DC figures are gaining in popularity and rival the folks at Marvel in terms of detail, painting and the overall look of the figures, sometimes surpassing them with smooth sculpts and really solid joint work.

The latest we’ve heard of the figures brings us to Series 9, available for pre-order over at our online store. The figures in the set are: Flash, Vigilante, Comic book and Super Powers Mantis, Classic and Modern Wildcat, Black Canary, Black Adam, Green Arrow, Guardian and Deadshot. And when you collect ‘em all (except for the alternates who come with part doubles and Flash and Vigilante, who do not come with parts), you can build the Metal Men supervillain Chemo, a plastic abomination. Check out the line by clicking the pic!
