Bakugan Battle Brawlers TV Cartoon Show

April 6, 2009

bakugan_dvd_volume_13_japaneseBakugan Battle Brawlers is a Japanese anime television series produced by TMS Entertainment and Japan Vistec under the direction of Mitsuo Hashimoto. The story centers on the lives of creatures called Bakugan and the battle brawlers who possess them. Consisting of fifty-one episodes, Bakugan Battle Brawlers debuted in Japan on TV Tokyo in 2007. Nelvana Limited produced the English language version and premiered the series on the Canadian network Teletoon later the same year. The English series differed in length from the Japanese version, consisting of 52 episodes compared with the Japanese 51. In February 2008 Cartoon Network began airing the series in the United States. In conjunction with the anime series, Sega Toys and Spin Master released a strategic game, called Bakugan, using metal cards and magnetic spring-loaded miniature figures.

Plot Synopsis

In an alternate dimension of Earth known as Vestroia a community of creatures known as Bakugan live in relative harmony. However, as the series opens, an evil Bakugan, Naga, decides to take a power relic, known as the Silent Core, from the rest of society and assimilate the core into himself to make him stronger and a ruler over the Bakugans. The negative energy of the Silent Core is too much for Naga to handle and it explodes. This explosion causes the Infinity Core to be shot into earth. These Silent and Infinite Cores must be found and brought back together in order to restore balance to Vestroia and allow the Bakugan to live in peace.

Many people in the human world began to find random metallic cards falling from the sky. The cards showed a Bakugan, the Bakugans traits and their environment. Children throughout the world began playing games with these cards which would spawn real events in the Vestroia dimension. The series protagonist, Dan Kuso, became quite skilled in the game of Bakugan. Dan along with his friends Shun, Runo, Marucho, Julie, and Alice form a group called the Bakugan Battle Brawlers. Together they use and learn about the Bakugan including the alternate dimension of reality they come from, Vestroia, and many of the Bakugan’s individual abilities. This soon leads the group to help in the fight to save Vestroia against the antagonists Masquerade, Hal-G, and the Bakugan Naga. Ultimately the Bakugan Battle Brawlers are in a race against these antagonists to get the Silent and Infinite Cores, and reunite them to bring balance back to Vestroia.

As the original 52 episodes come towards an end Naga and Hal-G launch a massive assault on the Battle Brawlers home city to find and locate Wavern, the Bakugan in possession of the Infinity Core. In the end, a powerful and good Bakugan. Drago, distories Wavern to make sure that the Infinity Core does not fall into the hands of Naga. Drago then absorbs the Infinity Core and becomes the ultimate Bakugan with no attribute limits. He and Dan battle Hal-G and Naga in a final battle, but Drago is injured in an attack from Naga’s defensive Bakugan. The other Battle Brawlers soon join in the fight with their own Bakugan to help Drago finish off the defensive Bakugan and ultimately Naga. In the end, Naga is destroyed, and the Silent Core is absorbed by Drago. As this happens all of the Bakugan in the human dimension must return to Vestroia. The series ends with Dan taking Runo on a date a couple of months after the final battle. As he is walking he looks to the sky and sees an image of Drago which tells him,”I’ll never forget you, my friend”

Main Characters on the TV show:

danDaniel “Dan” Kuso: The series main character, Dan is a boy who found out about bakugan and gets frustrated easily. His greatest ambition is to be the number one battle brawler in the universe. He is a Pyrus battler, and his guardian Bakugan is Pyrus Dragonoid(Also known as Drago). Drago later evolves to Delta Dragonoid, then Ultimate Dragonoid and finally Infinity Dragonoid. As one of the seasons running jokes, Dan and Runo often argue with each other. Dan has a crush towards Runo, but does not confess this until the end of the series, when they’re seen on a date together. Dan reached 1st or 2nd in the rankings. In the anime television series, Dan is voiced by Yu Kobayashi in the Japanese language and Scott McCord in the English language. Drago is voiced by Keiji Fujiwara in the Japanese language and Jason Deline in the English language.

runoRuno Misaki: Runo is a tomboy who loves playing Bakugan with people that have skills to show off. Runo is a Haos battler. Her Guardian Bakugan is a Haos Tigrerra, who is very obedient to her and powerful in battle.Tigrerra later evolves in to Blade Tigrerra. One of the things she hates the most, is when people believe they’re better at brawling then her, just because she is a girl. She helps her parents run their family business, and when Alice comes to visit, she helps Runo’s family with their restaurant, which leads to Runo becoming jealous as boys came just to see her. She has a crush on Dan, but won’t admit it. She reached 9th or 10th in the rankings. At the end of the series she and Dan are seen on a movie date. In the anime television series, Runo is voiced by Eri Sendai in the Japanese language and Julie Lemieux in the English language. Tigrerra is voiced by Atsushi Ono in the Japanese language and Joanne Vannicola in the English language.

maruchoMarucho Marukuro: He is a extremely rich boy who is very generous and intelligent, a bit like a walking encyclopedia. He loves to play Bakugan, alongside this is his fondness for creating strategies, over using brute force. He used to be very obedient to his parents just because he wanted to please them, but that changed when he met the Brawlers. He now has no regrets for the past, realizing that he only wanted to make his parents happy. He is an Aquos battler. His Guardian Bakugan is his Aquos Preyas, which, later in the series, is revealed to have a special evolution, allowing him to lay an egg and hatch from it his two, twin brothers. Preyas Angelo, and on the flip side, Preyas Diablo, which allowed Marucho to not only keep Preyas in his original form, but his ‘brother’ as well. Preyas was sent to the Doom Dimension in Marucho’s battle with Klaus Von Hertzon. Later Klaus shows up with Preyas. Dan and Runo find a way to get Preyas back through defeating him in battle. After this incident, Preyas lays his egg, as mentioned above. Preyas also has a move called “Change of Attribute” with that he can take advantage of the opponent’s gate card. Preyas II has a split personality: Angelo Preyas seems to be a bit more intelligent and nice compared to Diablo, who usually says exactly what Angelo says, but in a different way. He reached 11th or 12th. In the anime television series, Marucho is voiced by Ryou Hirohashi in the Japanese language and Stevie Vallance in the English language. Preyas is voiced by Shawn Unifier.

julieJulie Makimoto: Julie is a girl who tries to stay happy even when the worst has happened (for example, when Billy ended up under the control of Masquerade); her acting happy after something bad happened is generally just to hide up her true feelings. Julie forgets things easily, proving that she is a little scatterbrained at times. She is a Subterra battler, whose guardian Bakugan is a Subterra Gorem.Gorem then evolves in to Hammer Gorem. At the beginning of the series, she is shown to have a little crush on Dan (which led to some arguments with a jealous Runo), but later, accepts that Dan and Runo are going out. At the end, she and Billy go on their first date. Julie has a sister named Daisy who has bested her in everything since she was a child. She reached 12th or 13th. In the anime television series, Julie is voiced by Risa Mizuno in the Japanese language and Katie Griffin in the English language. Gorem is voiced by Hiroki Yasumoto.

shunShun Kazami: Shun is a boy who is the former first ranked Bakugan brawler who later moves down to sixth position. He is a master of Bakugan, and is also Dan’s childhood friend. Shun is a loner, a boy of very few words, yet is willing to help his friends at every turn almost. He is a Ventus battler. He approaches Bakugan like a ninja. He lives with his grandfather (who used to be a famous ninja warrior) who once expected Shun to follow in his footsteps instead of playing Bakugan. His Guardian Bakugan is a Ventus Skyress whom Shun received from his sick mother in the hospital.Skyress then evolves in to Storm Skyress. Shun once leaves the brawlers when Dan says they don’t need him. But after brawling Komba, Dan appears and asks for forgivness which Shun accepts. But he seems he likes Alice .   Skyress is voiced by Chiharu Suzuka.

Alice Gehabich: Alice is a girl from Moscow, Russia. Although she knows almost everything about the game, she only sometimes plays it. She usually just gives advice to the other brawlers, which she prefers over battling. Michael Gehabich is her grandfather; who she constantly worries about, after finding out his alter ego is Hal-G, and he works along side Naga. During the season Alice begins to be more understanding of Shun because they both have something in common, loneliness. Alice and Marucho are the 2 brawlers who mostly use strategy. However, unlike Marucho, Alice gives her strategies to the brawlers. During season 2 she left the Brawlers after finding out that she was Masquerade out of intense guilt over what she had done as him, but later returns as Masquerade in time to save Dan and Drago. Once she saves them, Masquerade permanently leaves her body (which Alice at first resents because she believed that she needs him), but leaves Alpha Hydranoid for her to control. Alpha Hydranoid, her ‘secret’ Bakugan is a Darkus Attribute, so he often remains unused, due to his evil intent. In the anime television series, Alice is voiced by Mamiko Noto in the Japanese language and Emilie Barlow in the English language.

Masquerade: He used to be the first-ranked Bakugan player before he left Alice’s body. His goal is to send all Bakugan to the Doom Dimension with his Doom Card, so he can evolve his Hydranoid and have the ultimate Bakugan. He is a Darkus battler. He is revealed to be Alice in episode 38 and his origin is revealed in episode 39. Masquerade came to life when negative energy changed Alice (who doesn’t know she is Masquerade or what happens when she becomes him). Darkus Hydranoid is Masquerade’s guardian Bakugan. He battles with Dan in episode 38 and losses. After that Masquerade takes his mask off, revealing his identity, Alice. He very rarely loses a match and wins most often. In the anime television series, Masquerade is voiced by Souichiro Hoshi in the Japanese language and Lyon Smith in the English language.

Joe Brown: Also known as Webmaster Joe. During the beginning of the series, it was revealed that due to a health condition, he basically lived in a hospital. During this time the Brawlers thought that he was, or was working for, Masquerade. After Dan confronted him, he told Dan that he would only tell him the truth if Dan could beat him in a battle. In the middle of the battle, Joe fainted, and when he awoke he revealed that the brawlers theories were untrue, and he actually sent a message to all of the Bakugan players around the world to warn them that Masquerade was plotting against them. After the truth was revealed, they asked him if he wanted to become a Brawler, which he gladly accepted the offer to. He then revealed him and his mother were going on a Road trip for the time being, to see the world outside of the hospital. Sometime later, after he moved to the Brawlers neighborhood, he found Wavern who had the Infinity Core hidden inside of her. Wavern is a non-attributed bakugan, meaning her abilities in battle are to an extent. Wavern is Joe’s guardian Bakugan. It is also revealed that Wavern is Naga’s younger twin sister. Joe is the first person to beat Masquerade at Bakugan, after he obtains his new Bakugan, Wavern. In the anime television series, Joe is voiced by Souichiro Hoshi.

Secondary characters on the TV Show

Billy Gilbert: Julie’s childhood friend and 10th Ranked Bakugan player. He played Julie when they first battled, but lost in a rematch, and lost 9 more times when he was under the control of Masquerade.Once while battleing under Masquerade’s rule Billy almost sends both Gorem and Julie to the doom dimension. He is shown to like Julie in episode 47. At the end of the series, Julie asks him if he would like to go on a date some time, and he agrees. Also, at the end of episode 47 Julie makes it known that the two are boyfriend and girlfriend. It is assumed that they are still going out.

Klaus Von Herzen: He was once the second ranked Bakugan player, but later moves down to textrank 4 after being defeated by Masquerade. He is an Aquos battler and his guardian Bakugan is Aquos Sirenoid, who he shares a deep bond with. He sent Marucho’s Aquos Preyas into the Doom Dimension, but gave him back later. He somewhat has a crush on Alice.

Chan Lee: The third rank brawler that appeared in episode 14, and was recruited by Masquerade. She uses Pyrus attribute Bakugan and her guardian Bakugan is Pyrus Fortress. Dan Kuso beat her on episode 16. Pyrus Fortress gets sent to the Doom Dimension in Episode 26. She is reunited with him sometime around episodes 32 and 36. She has a crush on Joe and at the end of the second series when Dan is on his date with Runo, she and Joe can be seen together in the background. At the end she and Joe are going out. In episode 49 Chan rescues Joe from Hal-G using her martial arts moves. She is voiced by Candi Milo.

Komba O’Charlie: The 5th Ranked Bakugan player and Julie’s neighbor in Africa. He uses Ventus attribute Bakugan, Harpus. He used to be rather selfish and refused to accept his first defeat from Shun and challenges him again, although he lost. He was ranked fifth best Bakugan player until his defeat in episode 26 and the loss of Harpus, which was Masquerade’s doing.

Julio Santana: The 4th Ranked Bakugan player and self-proclaimed master of Haos-attribute bakugan. His Guardian Bakugan is Haos Tentaclear. Tentaclear does not talk but is strong in battle. Julio is a bully of the Brawlers.

Jenny & Jewles: A.K.A. JJ Dolls, are not really part of the show but make aperances in episodes 7,8,9,45, and 52. Maybe even episode 10. Their first appearances was on episode 7,8, and 9, when they show up at Marucho’s house and battles Marucho and Dan when Masquerade tempted them with the doom card. They make another appearance in episode 45 when the help beat Tayghen with Marucho. They also appear in episode 52 waving good bye to their bakugan. Jenny battles with Aquos bakugan and for Jewles Subterra bakugan. In episode 45 it is shown that Jewles likes blue. Jenny & Jewles are shown to battle together and are pop star singing sisters. Jenny is the one with purple hair and Jewles has Aqua Green hair. Also Jenny’s guardian bakugan might be an Aquos Siege and for Jewels a Subterra Centipoid.

Bakugan Video Game: Xbox, Playstation, Nintendo Wii

March 1, 2009

I found the following news article posted on PRNewsire about Bakugan Video Games:

SANTA MONICA, Calif., Feb. 24 /PRNewswire-FirstCall/ – Activision Publishing, Inc. (Nasdaq: ATVI) announced today an agreement with Corus Entertainment Inc.’s Nelvana Enterprises to develop and distribute video games based on the breakout hit toy and wildly popular action animated television series Bakugan. The first Bakugan game will be released for Wii(TM), Nintendo DS(TM), Xbox 360(R) video game and entertainment system from Microsoft, and PLAYSTATION(R)3 and PlayStation(R)2 computer entertainment systems in the fall of 2009.

“Bakugan’s success in 2008 speaks for itself and we’re confident it will be even bigger in 2009,” said David Oxford, Activision Publishing. “It is our goal to expand this proven property in a way that both fans and gamers will love.”

“Ever since Bakugan exploded in popularity, players have been clamoring for a video game version,” said Doug Murphy, President, Nelvana and GM, Corus Kids. “We share our fans’ excitement in doing battle in an interactive Bakugan world!”

Bakugan tells the story of Dan and his friends as they battle their Bakugan Brawlers to save the planet of Vestroia and, ultimately, Earth from destruction. The series airs on Cartoon Network in the United States and internationally, and on TELETOON in Canada. The toy line, developed by Spin Master Ltd., brings action to the popular genre of collectible trading card games with marble-like Bakugan spheres that transform into “battle brawling” action figures when rolled onto special game cards. A genuine toy craze in the 2008 holiday season, Bakugan recently won three “Toy of the Year” awards from The Toy Industry Association: overall Toy of the Year, Boy Toy of the Year, and Property of the Year.

The video games, under development by veteran Japanese studio NOW Production, will render the elements that made Bakugan a worldwide phenomenon into mind-blowing digital experiences. Everything a Bakugan enthusiast and gamer would love is here – intense battles, the ability to create your own Brawler, cartoon quality graphics and multiplayer combat.

Most Popular Bakugan is….Double Side Headed Preyas II or Dragonoid

February 25, 2009

Bakugan Battle Brawlers

I was bored this past weekend working in the store…..I was wondering what I could talk about on the blog….my mind was a blank.   Then a kid asked me an question that I heard about a hundred times while working:

Mister….What is the most popular Bakugan?

Mmm…I told the young man, “Good question, my little grasshopper….let me think about it.”   Certain bakugan creatures gain popularity and then another one comes along to eclipse it.   Clearly, Dragonoid is the best selling bakugan from the beginning.  We have probably sold over 826 Dragonoids over the past year (yes…I have actual stats of it in our computer system).   I am a “stats guy” that manages a Rotisserie fantasy baseball team and can recall players stats with extreme accuracy but I digress.

Lately we have been getting a lot of request for the Double Side Preyas II (also called Double Head Preyas II).   I would say this is the most popular bakugan right now.

Here are some pictures of the current “Most Popular Bakugan”…Double side Preyas II

Special Attack Bakugan Series

February 18, 2009

The latest release of the Special Attack Bakugan Series is here and it features some really cool new creatures. The Double Head Preyas Bakugan is my favorite of them all. Every kid is asking for the Double Head Preyas II which features two different G-Power heads. One end will have a 450G power rating and the other side will have a 650G power rating….now isn’t that cool. I love playing with this Double Headed Preyas II creature….most of the kids freak out when they see that it can open up at both ends.

Here are some pics I took of these awesome looking Special Attack Bakugans:

These new Special Attack Bakugan are awesome.  Add these creatures to your arsenal and freak out your opponents….
