James Cameron to shoot three Avatar sequels at once

July 7, 2012

Article by Earnest Cavalli at Digital Trends.

Remember a few months back when James Cameron claimed that for the foreseeable future he would only be working on Avatar sequels and the occasionally documentary to satisfy his affection for the deep sea? Apparently that was no joke, as a recent interview with Sigourney Weaver claims that the next three Avatar films are going into production all at once.

Fans of the original Avatar will likely recall a rather major plot point that involved the death of Weaver’s character, so unless there’s some kind of ecologically-friendly alien magic keeping her alive indefinitely how much sense does it make that she should be prominently featured in the next three flicks?

Wait, that’s exactly what it is, huh? Weaver did die in the first movie, but her mind/spirit/connection to Gaea is going to live on eternally as some kind of spiritual advisor. Sorta like Obi Wan, only with more tongue-in-cheek references to that time she punched an Alien Queen right in the telescoping mandible. Granted, we have no insider information to support this idea, but if Weaver’s character isn’t some kind of ethereal forest spirit who offers stern warnings to the human forces that upsetting the balance of nature on Pandora will end in their bloody defeat, we will be stunned. Doubly so if the spirit doesn’t speak with a ton of reverb and isn’t a shade of ethereal green — any more blue would be a bit gauche, no?

James Cameron on AVATAR 2

April 21, 2010

Good news for Avatar fans! Even as the film heads into theatres, James Cameron isn’t letting the opportunity for more 3D viewings (or more cash) slip by: a re-release is in the cards with about 10 extra minutes of new footage added in.

But more than that, Cameron recently made official all the talk about Avatar 2. SlashFilm has the news.

The Los Angeles Times has interviewed James Cameron to promote the upcoming DVD and Blu-ray release of Avatar. The interview features a bunch of newsworthy bits, including a confirmation that Avatar will be rereleased theatrically in August with new footage, and that the sequel will focus on the Oceans of Pandora. Check out the highlightes below:

* In March it was rumored that Fox was considering rereleasing Avatar in theaters in Fall 2010, possibly with additional footage. Cameron confirms the rerelease and extra footage: “We’re working on finishing an additional six minutes of the film — which includes a lot of Weta work — for a theatrical re-release in August.”
* Avatar 2 will take us into the oceans of Pandora: “We created a broad canvas for the environment of film. That’s not just on Pandora, but throughout the Alpha Centauri AB system. And we expand out across that system and incorporate more into the story – not necessarily in the second film, but more toward a third film. ” … “Part of my focus in the second film is in creating a different environment – a different setting within Pandora. And I’m going to be focusing on the ocean on Pandora, which will be equally rich and diverse and crazy and imaginative, but it just won’t be a rain forest. I’m not saying we won’t see what we’ve already seen; we’ll see more of that as well.” Sounds good, but the question is, when can we expect to see the films on the big screen?

Cameron also talks about why he doesn’t want to just produce movies, how the enviormental impact of Avatar might change his outlook as a creator, and how he is becoming more fascinated by the reality of the science-fiction world in which we live than the sci-fi we see in television/movies/books.

For collectors, we’ve got some news on a new set of toys that’s just arrived over in our Avatar section. A pair of banshees, new Jake Sully figures, even a pair of awesome viperwolves. It’s a pretty awesome addition to the collection if I do say so myself. Check ‘em out here:

Avatar Toys Have Avatars

January 18, 2010

From Geek Chic!

James Cameron's Avatar Action Figures
We’ve had the Avatar figures for a few months now….and I just got the chance to play with them. The toys themselves are nothing particularly revolutionary. (Unless you’ve long been clamoring for something that looked like a smurf—but lankier.) What’s impressive are the toys i-TAG augmented reality cards.

First, download some software. Then, hold the card up to your computer’s webcam. The software will overlay a 3D digital image of the toy on the web cam footage, as if that toy is hovering on the i-TAG card. Move the card around and the image moves with it. Push buttons on the card and the virtual toy will maneuver or open fire. To get a better idea of what that means, check out the demonstration video below. Sure, it’s not as revolutionary as what you’ll see in theaters, but go ahead and check it out anyway. It’s pretty cool.

James Cameron, fan get in argument over ‘Avatar’ autograph

December 25, 2009

james cameronJames Cameron and one of his fans weren’t exactly full of holiday cheer on Wednesday night; rather, they chose to fling a few choice words at each other after a dispute over an autograph.

Here’s pretty much what happened: a fan approached the Oscar-winning director at LAX in hopes of getting his “Avatar” poster autographed; when Cameron turned it down, saying “he didn’t owe” the fan a signature, that’s where the fan goes ballistic. He accuses the director of not caring about his fans, and then goes on a tirade talking about how he paid $15 to see “Avatar” and can’t even get a signature in return.

Of course, there’s a chance that this guy was making the entire story up to sell the poster online; either way, should a director be obligated to sign the poster for a “fan?” Check out the video here (with a warning for language) and let me know what you think!

AVATAR Sequel Possible?

December 23, 2009

We’ve already talked about the sheer scale of the mondo-hit movie Avatar, and naturally mentioned the line ot action figures that accompanies any fantasy film with this kind of success. But like every movie these days, it sounds like might be in for a second installment–and definitely not in the decades it took Cameron to conceive of and create the first one!

The GK Men blog has the story…

The popcorn has yet to be swept from the theatre isles for James Cameron’s winter blockbuster Avatar and already the director is announcing plans for sequels.

Cameron, known for his big budget franchises which include Alien and The Terminator, has told MTV he has plans for not one but two sequels for his new blue heroes.

The director, who was also responsible for the epic Titanic movie starring Leonardo DiCaprio and Kate Winslett, told the broadcaster that sequels were always part of the plan when he set about creating his hi-tech masterpiece.

“I have a trilogy-scaled arc of story right now, but I haven’t really put any serious work into writing a script,” he said.

However, the subsequent on screen adventures will hit screens sooner than the first part of the franchise as the technology is now already in place, Cameron explained.

“My next goal is to refine the technique, make it easier so it doesn’t take as long,” he added

“We were doing a lot of pioneering work on ‘Avatar.’ It wouldn’t have taken as long if we already knew exactly how to do it.”

Clash of the Titans…in 3-D?

December 21, 2009

As if I needed even more reason to be excited about the upcoming Clash of the Titans remake, there’s news from Sam Worthington (who can currently be seen in James Cameron’s Avatar) that the film might get a 3-D release and that the buzz around it has allowed them the budget to re-shoot some old scenes and throw in a few new ones. Apparently the extra cash has also given them the chance to include some more Gods, which should definitely be interesting seeing as Liam Neeson, Ralph Fiennes and Danny Huston as Zeus, Hades and Poseidon respectively already seem to be too awesome to improve upon.

Here’s the full story from Yahoo news!

“Clash of the Titans” will be a race to the finish, star Sam Worthington told the LA Times on Friday.

The mythological action film, due in March, will be shooting additional scenes and bulking up its budget before its release date, the “Avatar” actor told the newspaper.

“We’re going to be going back and shooting more scenes for it, they cut loose with some money so we can add to it,” Sam said, noting that the last-minute shooting would be on a tight deadline.

“We’re going to be shooting more scenes in January, so we’re going to be right up against it — the movie comes out in March,” he said.

But the star said the decisions were based in Warner Bros.’ confidence in the remake of the 1981 film – not to fix flubbed scenes.

“There were some creaky parts but they are the parts that we knew were creaky and that we knew were going to be creaky going into it,” he said. “The studio is also letting us add some gods and scenes. And they’re talking about making the movie a 3D film.”

The Australian actor stars alongside Liam Neeson and Ralph Fiennes in “Clash,” with “The Incredible Hulk” helmer Louis Leterrier directing. Whatever its new budget, it’s doubtful that it touches the cost of Sam’s current film, “Avatar,” which a New York Times report estimated at $500 million in November.

“Avatar” performed strongly in its first day of release, earning an estimated $27 million domestically.

And if you’re a Worthington fan or just enjoyed the heck out of the cinematic experience that was Avatar, we’ve got a selection of action figures that you can check out over in CmdStore’s Avatar section!

Iron Man 2 Trailer Coming Soon?

December 10, 2009

Worstpreviews.com has some good news for Iron Man fans who can’t wait for the trailer for the next movie: it might be accompanying Robert Downey Jr.’s upcoming film! Not to mention standing alongside the fourth Shrek movie’s teaser before Avatar.

About a month ago, director Jon Favreau hinted that the trailer for the upcoming “Iron Man” sequel will appear in front of “Sherlock Holmes” on December 25th. Apparently that plan has changed, or slightly modified.

According to a very unreliable source, the IMDB message boards, a worker at a New Zealand movie theater said the following: “Hey, i work as a projectionist for a theater complex, Berkley Cinemas, in Auckland, New Zealand and we just got an email from Paramount today to say that they will be sending out the first trailers for Iron Man 2 and Shrek Forever After next week to be played before Avatar beginning Dec. 17.”

It has already been confirmed that the trailer for “Shrek Forever After” will play in front of “Avatar,” so it’s not a big surprise that “Iron Man” would want to get in on unveiling the first footage with one of the biggest films of the year. I’m sure the “Iron Man 2″ trailer will be in front of “Sherlock Holmes,” a week later, as well.

And while the Christmas season seems at once too far away and too soon, the actual Iron Man release in 2010 will at least be bringing with it a ton of press, comic book tie-ins, merchandise and–you guessed it: ACTION FIGURES! So here’s a look at just two of the items we’re getting; they’re both from the extremely popular Marvel Select collection and feature a look at the faces of both Tony Stark (Iron Man, played by Robert Downey Jr.) and his best friend James Rhodes (War Machine, played by Don Cheadle, who replaces Terrence Howard). Check ‘em out!

New Avatar Figures!

November 20, 2009

James Cameron has all but promised that the upcoming sci-fi fantasy, AVATAR, will change the face of cinema as we know it. Though he has offered very few clues about the film itself or the story it tells, his words have made many a critic doubt him and many a fan drool at the prospect of a revolutionary tale from the Terminator creator. Personally, I’m a little on the fence about it as the hype has reached such incredible heights that almost no film could ever hope to live up to it in the eyes of the future watchers. But we’ll see, right?

The film stars Sam Worthington (Terminator Salvation, Clash of the Titans), Zoe Saldana (Star Trek, Vantage Point), Michelle Rodriguez (LOST, Resident Evil), Sigourney Weaver (Alien, Galaxy Quest) and a cast of other top-tier talent.

Before the opening in December 18th, you can already grab some action figures from the film, including a number of strange and wonderful creatures alongside the more mundane humans. Those avoiding spoilers will likely be very confused by some of the items included in Mattel’s toy collection, but it’ll all become clear soon and, until then, just enjoy some very cool-looking items.
