Coming in September… Halo Minimates and REACH

August 30, 2010

This September, we tart shipping out a series 1 box set of Diamond Select’s Halo Mini-Mates figures! A group of four 2.5-inch figures (with 14 points of articulation!!) based on the hugely popular video game, the Mini-Mates feature video game-accurate armour and accessories while still being anthing BUT game-accurate in terms of form! Master Chief, a UNSC Marine, a Spartan in White Scout Armour, and an Elite in cobalt Assault Armour make up this first series, but given the “collectibility” of something like this, I’m pretty sure you can expect this PX Exclusive to be the beginning of something big–and small.

We’ve also got some brand new stuff coming in from Halo Reach! These items start shipping in September, but you can already take a look at what’ll be out there with individual action figures, 2-packs and vehicles! Click the pic below to check ‘em out!

And if you’re still salivating over REACH, we’re pleased to see thatKotaku.com has a look at the latest live-action game trailer, but not a lot of good to say about it:

The Halo universe is famous for explosions and the colour purple. But pregnant British women? Never seen one of them in a Halo game before.

This is yet another live-action trailer for Halo: Reach, showing the lives of some of the citizens of Reach the day before the Covenant invasion.

They’re OK, but Microsoft, the more of these you put out, the worse they’re getting, and the less impact they’re having. The pointiest tip of the Halo fanbase may get off on seeing bickering civilians, but the majority of customers are in this for the explosions.

Watch it here!

Pre-Order: Splinter Cell’s SAM FISHER by NECA

August 17, 2010

NECA’s new addition to its Player Select line catalogue of video game figures is a figure long awaited by fans: SPLINTER CELL’S Sam Fisher! Dressed in the more casual duds seen in Splinter Cell: Conviction, Sam cuts an impressive figure in this a brilliantly-designed 7-inch figure. Another plus is that it boasts a number of weapons as accessories, removable body armour, a backpack and, on top of that, unlike many NECA items, Sam features 20 points of articulation.

It’s the first-ever figure of the character and an item that’ll probably go pretty quick once it goes on sale–which means you might want to pre-order this one to get it ASAP when it ships in October!

And to tide you over while the figure is headed your way, you can read up on a rumour posted over at Lazy Gamer that suggests PS3-users will soon be able to get on-board with some XBox Splinter Cell goodness!

Has Ubisoft decided to release one of the Xbox 360’s premier exclusives onto the PS3? According to a product listing on Amazon.fr PS3 owners will be receiving the Splinter Cell Trilogy on the 2nd of November this year.

Not to be mistaken for Splinter Cell Conviction, the trilogy was released onto the PC 3 years ago and has already seen the light of day on the PS2 so this may not be a sign of things to come.

But then again, it is becoming less viable to stay exclusive to a single platform and with Amazon also listing the Prince of Persia trilogy for the PS3 we may be seeing the end of this particular exclusive.

And if you ARE an XBox 360-user and want to snag yourself a copy of Conviction, look no further!

New Figures from Sonic the Hedgehog!

July 8, 2010

He’s one of the new Sonic figures we’ve gotten in-stock and ready to go, joining a bunch of 3- and 6-inch figures including mini vehicles, Silver the Hedgehog, Knuckles (super poser and 3-inch) and Shadow the Hedgehog, plus many, many more. They’re all from Jazwares, who have been the leading provider of all things Sonic in recent years, producing high-quality items that capture all the adventure and character of the massively popular and long-lasting series. Check ‘em out!

But wait! There’s even more good news for fans, back from E3. Remember this from February?

Well, it seems like Sega’s almost ready to send it our way. Here’s the report from Pcmag.com!

LOS ANGELES – Sega displayed a slew of Sonic the Hedgehog games at E3 2010, including “Sonic Colors DS” and “Sonic Colors Wii,” but it was the upcoming “Sonic the Hedgehog 4: Episode 1″ that generated the most buzz at Sega’s booth.

“Sonic 4″ is throwback to the 16-bit Sonic games that helped the Genesis compete with the Super NES in the early to mid 1990′s. There aren’t any silly side characters, no werewolf transformations, or black Sonic clones with guns. Instead, the game was remarkably simplistic and quite refreshing.

Gameplay is classic Sonic. In our hands-on time with the game, we found it remarkably similar to the original “Sonic the Hedgehog.” Sonic plods along until momentum is gained, sending him whizzing through loops, over hills, and other familiar Sonic locales. The 1080p HD graphics are appropriately bright and cheery, and the music is delightful.

“Sonic the Hedgehog 4: Episode 1″ will be available in late summer for the PS3 and Xbox 360.

New Assassin’s Creed 2 Figures: Ezio in Black and White

July 4, 2010

Standing at about 7 inches tall and boasting 20 points of articulation and retractable blades on his arms, these renderings of Assassin Creed 2′s protagonist Ezio are yet another brilliant example of the kind of quality the designers and painters at NECA are able to produce with their awesome figure line. And with Assassin’s Creed 3 on the way, along with more being added to a franchise that already seems to possess a great deal of depth, these are an excellent addition to any gamer’s toy shelf as the software companies move into more and more mainstream merch. Ezio comes in two versions, black and white, and they are some great-looking toys.Check ‘em out!

That said, if you’re still on Altair and haven’t managed to snag the second entry into what can now officially be called the Assassin’s Creed trilogy, here are the Amazon links to grab it on X-Box, PS3 and PC!

Assassin’s Creed II for The Xbox 360

Assassin’s Creed II for the PS3

Assassin’s Creed 2 for the PC

And one more thing for those following the development of the next entries. Here’s some interesting new information on the upcoming Assassin’s Creed: Brotherhood’s “Chaotic” Multiplayer Mode from MTV.

When we first learned that “Assassin’s Creed: Brotherhood” would have multiplayer, there was some concern that the mode would be tacked on to justify another $60 purchase. Having played a handful of adversarial matches, however, it’s obvious that the mode fits in with the rest of the franchise extremely well.

There’s a whole complex backstory behind the multiplayer of “Brotherhood.” Technically you’re playing Templars, disguised as assassins, being uploaded into the memories of those assassins. As I said, it’s complex. For clarity’s sake, we’ll just say you’re playing as an assassin and save yourself the headache.

The mode I checked out was an 8-player free-for-all match set in Florence. Players pick from a handful of character models and hop into the game. Each player is then assigned one of the other players to kill. Kill the wrong player or kill one of the hundreds of hapless AI citizens wandering around and you’ll lose points. Unfortunately for you, the AI citizens are the same models used by some of the players, so you have to use your Sonar-style tracker to confirm that you are, indeed, next to the correct target.

The trick to the game is to think like a member of the AI citizenry. Sprinting at full speed or climbing on buildings is only going to give you away as a player, so you’re better off walking slowly through crowds until you get close enough to make your move on your target.

Unfortunately once you get close enough, your target will be alerted to your presence and will probably sprint away for survival. Just like killing your mark, escaping your assassin will give you points, so you could theoretically win the match just by dodging your would-be killers. Falling gates and hay stacks offer nice hiding places, but you’ve also got smoke bombs and other abilities to help out.

Now this makes for an interesting cat-and-mouse game, but you have to remember that it’s not just two of you out there. There’s eight. And someone else is trying to kill you while you’re trying to kill your target while they’re trying to kill someone else. This is where the chaos comes in, and the game could probably use some tweaking. In our few matches, every time I managed to get close and kill my target, my assassin was right behind me to kill the second I pulled the knife out. It makes for a ridiculous line of people waiting for other people to make a kill, which is a little less elegant than it should be in “Assassin’s Creed.”

Of course, this is only one mode, and despite the chaos, I did have a lot of fun with it. Hoping to spend time with the single-player campaign this week during E3, so stay tuned for more on “Brotherhood” soon.

Sideshow’s New 20-inch Prince of Persia Statue: DASTAN

July 2, 2010

Dastan, the Prince of Persia joins the Sideshow lineup as a brand new statue clad in a real fabric costume and bearing a brilliant likeness to actor Jake Gyllenhaal, who of course portrayed the hero in Disney’s 2010 adaptation of the hit video game. Here’s a look:

The statue itself stands a whopping 20 inches tall and wields the twin blades seen in the film. Naturally, the sculpting is top-notch, as anything else would never do for Sideshow, whose items seem to be getting better and better. Fans of the film are sure to love it. And they’re also sure to love this news:

In this piece from The Independent, we learn that The Prince of Persia Surpasses Tomb Raider as the Highest-grossing video game adaptationHopefully this’ll pave the way for a ton of great new movies based on some of the brilliantly-written games currently out there. Assassin’s Creed anyone? Here’s the full story:

With more than $295 million in worldwide earnings, Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time is now the biggest grossing film adaptation of a video game. The previous holder of the record was 2001′s Lara Croft: Tomb Raider, which held the position at $275 million.

It has taken almost a decade to better the record of the first Lara Croft film starring Angelina Jolie. It took Jerry Bruckheimer’s production starring Jake Gyllenhaal and Gemma Arterton to grab the top spot and much of its accomplishment is owing to the outstanding performance internationally.

Prince of Persia’s box office receipts only totaled $81 million in the US, compared to Lara Croft which made $131 million in the US. But Prince pulled in more than $213 million around the world where it was the No. 1 film in most countries.

This success should disprove the conventional wisdom that films based on video games are doomed. Some have theorized that this is because most video games lack a strong narrative.

Resident Evil will try again with another sequel, Afterlife, in September with Milla Jovovich and Mortal Kombat will return in 2013.

Of course, it’s just a great time to be into Prince of Persia over all, isn’t it? Because the new game is doing amazingly well and if you haven’t grabbed it, here are the Amazon links where you can get your hands on it for whichever console you like:

Prince of Persia: The Forgotten Sands for The XBox 360

Gears of War: Film Confirmed + A New Figure!

June 22, 2010

Good news for Gears of War fans! From the UK’s Electronic Theatre comes an article on the confirmation of a film version of the hugely successful video game property:

Long rumoured as in production, Microsoft has today confirmed the existence of a Gears of War feature film, almost inadvertently. While announcing that Ice-T would lend his voice talents to the upcoming Gears of War 3, the publisher issued an official statement confirming the existence of a movie based upon the franchise.

While there have been many rumours, with the reported screenwriter openly acknowledging the existence of a movie adaptation of the Gears of War franchise, no official confirmation that a film had been green lit has ever been received from Microsoft, Epic Games or any other party involved with the production. Today however, that all changed.

The press release issued earlier today revealing the vocal talents of Ice-T as Griffin, a new character in Gears of War 3, also offered the first official acknowledgement that a motion-picture based upon the franchise is currently underway.

“The “Gears of War” series is one of the most popular franchises in Xbox history, having sold more than 12 million copies worldwide, and spawning New York Times best-selling novels, an upcoming film and more,” read the press release, proud of the achievements of Epic Games’ popular videogame series.

And if that isn’t enough good news, the San Diego Comic Con figure of Gears of War 3′s Jace has now been revealed and we’ve got it available for pre-order in case you can’t make it to the con. He stands about 6 inches and comes with game-faithful weapons. But most impressively, I think, is the sculpting, which is a startlingly realistic look, but still manages to capture the style of the game. Really great.

He joing a bunch of other Gears of War figures, from 6-inch figures to Batsus to a ton of multi-packs and exclusives. Check ‘em out!
