Resident Evil: Operation Raccoon City CONFIRMED!

March 28, 2011

Good news for Resident Evil fans from Capcom Unity! Read on:

Capcom® a leading worldwide developer and publisher of videogames, today announced Resident Evil®: Operation Raccoon City, is in development for the PlayStation®3 computer entertainment system, Xbox 360® video game and entertainment system from Microsoft® and PC. In addition it was also confirmed that the forthcoming Nintendo 3DS™ title, Resident Evil®: The Mercenaries 3D, will ship with a playable demo of Resident Evil® Revelations.

Resident Evil: Operation Raccoon City is collaboration between Capcom and Vancouver based studio Slant 6 Games and is scheduled for release this Winter. Since the launch of the first title 15 years ago the Resident Evil® series has enjoyed phenomenal success, selling over 45 million units worldwide to date. This latest offering will take the series in a completely new direction and offer a style of gameplay yet to be seen from the franchise.

Resident Evil: Operation Raccoon City delivers a true third person team based shooter experience set within the dark and sinister Resident Evil universe and a reinterpretation of the events depicted in Resident Evil® 2 and Resident Evil® 3. The setting of the Resident Evil universe not only provides a rich backdrop to the action but delivers a unique and thrilling triple threat battle. Zombies and Bio-Organic Weapons (B.O.W’s) add to the mix as players not only compete against an opposing squad but also tackle this third unpredictable element, creating a brand new style of gameplay and breaking the conventions of traditional team based shooters.

It is September 1998 and the action centres once more on the ill-fated Raccoon City and the horrific consequences of the deadly T-virus outbreak from the Umbrella facility. With a cover up required, Umbrella orders an elite team into Raccoon City to destroy all evidence of the outbreak and eliminate any survivors. Hearing of this plan, the US Government dispatches its own special forces to uncover any evidence that exposes the cause of the viral infection and Umbrella’s actions. Players take on the role of an Umbrella Security Services soldier (U.S.S.), competing alone or in four player co-op in a battle against all the competing forces at play in Raccoon City.

Expect the return of original Resident Evil enemies, iconic landmarks such as the Raccoon City Police Department and fan favourite characters, including Leon S. Kennedy, who as a rookie police officer in Raccoon City is on your hit list to eliminate. Players will experience a retelling of classic moments from past titles Resident Evil 2 and Resident Evil 3 and watch the events unfolding from the menacing perspective of the Umbrella Security Service, giving fans the chance to rewrite the history of the Raccoon City outbreak.

In addition, Resident Evil: Operation Raccoon City will deliver a number of competitive online multiplayer modes. Each one of these will provide a unique gaming experience thanks to the three way combat between the Umbrella Security Service, US Special Ops and threat of zombies and B.O.W’s that could only exist in the deadly and twisted Resident Evil Universe.

Purchasers of Resident Evil: The Mercenaries 3D, scheduled for release in the coming months, will get an extra taste of horror thanks to the addition of a playable demo of Resident Evil Revelations. Set on board an ocean liner, the demo lets players take control of one of the full game’s characters, Jill Valentine, as she explores the ship’s dark interior, killing any mysterious creatures that emerge from the shadows. A brand new title built from the ground up for the Nintendo 3DS, further details on Resident Evil Revelations will be revealed at this year’s E3.

Of course, we’re an action figure blog so we also recommend checking out our selection of Resident Evil toys from NECA, Square Enix and Sideshow! Click the pic below!

No More Guitar Hero

February 10, 2011

If you’re a fan of Guitar Hero, yesterday probably wasn’t your day. And if you’re not a fan, you still might have seen #RIPGuitarHero trending on Twitter and wondered what that was all about. Well, here’s your answer from CNN:

<

(Mashable) — The premiere plastic guitar game just flamed out. Activision, beset by falling sales, has decided to shutter the division that created “Guitar Hero” and its sequels.

It’s an ignominious exit for a title that was once touted as the first great game franchise of the 21st century. “Guitar Hero” was created in 2005 by indie studio RedOctane, in collaboration with Harmonix, which had previously found success with the “Karaoke Revolution” franchise.
“Karaoke Revolution,” where players plugged microphones into their consoles and were scored on the accuracy of their singing, was the first game to show a significant number of videogamers were interested in making “music.” RedOctane’s “Guitar Hero” proved they were equally interested in shredding a plastic guitar.

Activision purchased the franchise in 2006 for $100 million; to date it has shipped more than 25 million units for a roughly $2 billion ROI. “Guitar Hero III: Legends of Rock” made $1 billion on its own. Harmonix went on to publish the highly successful “Rock Band” franchise, which added drums, microphones and keyboards to the plastic guitar mix.
How the mighty have fallen. The holiday season was a disastrous one for the music game genre. First Harmonix was sold by Viacom to a consortium of shareholders; the terms were undisclosed, but it was reported to be a fire sale. MTV Games, which collaborated with Harmonix on “Rock Band,” was shut down. “Guitar Heroes: Warriors of Rock,” the sixth title in the series, received lackluster reviews and even more lackluster sales.

Activision posted a $233 million net loss for the fourth quarter. Its decision to lay off the 500-person “Guitar Hero” division was, Activision said in a press release today, “due to continued declines in the music genre.”

So what stopped the music? The first culprit: oversaturation. There are just too many games competing in the genre (“Band Hero” and “DJ Hero,” anyone?), with too many pricey controllers. A “Warriors of Rock” guitar bundle will set you back $80. Considering many of the controllers do not play nice with similar games, that’s a lot of dough to drop on pretend jamming.

Secondly, there’s the novelty factor. The dynamics of the game changed little from one title to the next, despite the introduction of innovations such as a touch-sensitive slide bar on later guitar controllers. At a certain stage, users are going to be more interested in picking up a real guitar. The series also felt like it was running out of great rock anthems for users to emulate. Reviews of “Warriors of Rock” complained that the set list seemed dull and full of synth-heavy tunes.
Finally, of course, Activision isn’t going to stop actually selling “Guitar Hero” titles any time soon. If you’re interested in becoming a maestro of the pretend Gibson, you can still pick up the “Guitar Hero” back catalog and buy extra songs online. “Guitar Hero” and “Rock Band” may one day be seen as a classic party game, pulled out of the closet at holidays and special gatherings, the way we play Monopoly or Scrabble today. Maybe it’s time you introduced Grandma to the plastic guitar.

If you’re one of the many saddened by these developments, you might want to check out the last couple Guitar Hero items we’ve got in-stock. Slash, Lars Umlaut, God of Rock and more await!

Sideshow’s New 20-inch Prince of Persia Statue: DASTAN

July 2, 2010

Dastan, the Prince of Persia joins the Sideshow lineup as a brand new statue clad in a real fabric costume and bearing a brilliant likeness to actor Jake Gyllenhaal, who of course portrayed the hero in Disney’s 2010 adaptation of the hit video game. Here’s a look:

The statue itself stands a whopping 20 inches tall and wields the twin blades seen in the film. Naturally, the sculpting is top-notch, as anything else would never do for Sideshow, whose items seem to be getting better and better. Fans of the film are sure to love it. And they’re also sure to love this news:

In this piece from The Independent, we learn that The Prince of Persia Surpasses Tomb Raider as the Highest-grossing video game adaptationHopefully this’ll pave the way for a ton of great new movies based on some of the brilliantly-written games currently out there. Assassin’s Creed anyone? Here’s the full story:

With more than $295 million in worldwide earnings, Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time is now the biggest grossing film adaptation of a video game. The previous holder of the record was 2001′s Lara Croft: Tomb Raider, which held the position at $275 million.

It has taken almost a decade to better the record of the first Lara Croft film starring Angelina Jolie. It took Jerry Bruckheimer’s production starring Jake Gyllenhaal and Gemma Arterton to grab the top spot and much of its accomplishment is owing to the outstanding performance internationally.

Prince of Persia’s box office receipts only totaled $81 million in the US, compared to Lara Croft which made $131 million in the US. But Prince pulled in more than $213 million around the world where it was the No. 1 film in most countries.

This success should disprove the conventional wisdom that films based on video games are doomed. Some have theorized that this is because most video games lack a strong narrative.

Resident Evil will try again with another sequel, Afterlife, in September with Milla Jovovich and Mortal Kombat will return in 2013.

Of course, it’s just a great time to be into Prince of Persia over all, isn’t it? Because the new game is doing amazingly well and if you haven’t grabbed it, here are the Amazon links where you can get your hands on it for whichever console you like:

Mario Kart Wii Figures: Pull-speed and Micro RC toys!

April 8, 2010

It did seem to take a while, but North America’s finally received the a collection of toys from the massively popular Mario Kart Wii! The Mario Kart Wii figures and vehicles include both pull-speed and RC options and both Mario and the sinister Wario are currently available. The micro remote control Mario is an especially fun choice, including a banana and a red shell to foil any opponents and a spare set of wheels in case that risky driving takes its toll. Definitely a great choice for fans of the game.

Another little bit of good news, though, is the potential arrival of an SNES emulator on the brand new iPad. iSmashPhone shows us through the glory of the classic Super Mario Kart.

Put down the Visine, bunky, your eyes are not deceiving you — that IS SNES Mario Kart running on an iPad, courtesy of emulator guru ZodTTD. So with various iPad jailbreaks already popping up like so many (Mario World!) mushrooms, it may be just a matter of time before you can drop the game ROM and Zod’s snes4iphone emulator onto your pwned ‘Pad and speed away.

BUT WAIT! There’s more! Zod’s claiming he created a “legal” (i.e. no-jailbreak-required) version of the emulator, even going so far as to submit it to the App Store:

The build of snes4iphone running on my iPad as seen in the video was actually based on an AppStore app I submitted called “snesty”. Apple quickly rejected it right after pulling the NES emulator. I combined snesty with some snes4iphone features such as using the private API called CoreSurface. I used Apple developer tools and self signed it.

He also promises a version of the emulator that’ll support the iPad’s 1024 x 768 native resolution and even touchscreen controls.

Finally, if you haven’t gotten your hands on what is, after a few years, still #32 on Amazon’s video game list, here’s a link!
