For this entry, I checked both Google News and the Matrix wiki for any information on whether there was more coming and while Google provided little, the wiki does claim that something’s coming out this year, so I guess we’ll have to spend at least some of 2010 staying tuned for word! Until then, Matrix action figure memories…

We’ve put up a pre-order for the newest Transformers figure over at CmdStore.com. Based on the second Transformers movie, this 12-inch figure is Shadow Command Megatron, which I am told is his new look as he returns from the “dead” to retake his place as Decepticon leader. Maybe. See, I didn’t actually watch the second movie. I heard it was awful, but it made a ridiculous amount of money in 2009 and there must be some reason for that (Megan Fox? Explosions? Something…). Normally I might feel bad now being up on this, but it seems that I’m not the only one. The voice of Megatron, Hugo Weaving (V for Vendetta, The Wolfman, The Lord of the Rings, The Matrix) doesn’t appear to have caught it either.

Hugo Weaving (“The Lord of the Rings” and “Matrix” trilogies), who has voiced Megatron in both Transformers and Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen, revealed to The Age that he doesn’t know much about the movies:

As the voice of Megatron, one imagines how into the series Weaving is, but just how deeply immersed he is becomes clear when discussing the next installment.

“Oh no,” he barks with a laugh. “They’re not making Transformers III, are they?” Given that Transformers II made $800 million, they’re probably going to have to.

“[Director] Michael Bay talks to me on the phone. I’ve never met him. We were doing the voice for the second one and I still hadn’t seen the first one. I still didn’t really know who the characters were and I didn’t know what anything was. It’s a voice job, for sure, and people assume I’ve spent my life working on it, but I really know so little about it.”

Hey, at least he was honest! Transformers 3 is scheduled for a July 1, 2011 release.

We’ve just gotten new shipments of two popular items to add to our Star Trek section, so check ‘em out!

In honour of the 20th anniversary of Star Trek: The Next Generation, Captain Picard is here in action figure form by Diamond Select, accompanied by the command chair he occupied for so many seasons on the U.S.S. Enterprise 1701-D. Rightfully referred to as a milestone figure, it features 16 points of articulation and is an Art Asylum sculpt.

The eighth series of Toynami’s Futurama action figures has now arrived and it in stock over at CmdStore.com. As usual, of course, the series is a mere two figures (they do like to keep us wanting more) and this duo consists of Chef Bender and the megalomaniacal CEO known only as “Mom”. Each one comes with a part of Roberto, the collection’s latest Build-a-Figure, and stands about 7 or 8 inches tall. The design of the figures is naturally very simple, but as such very faithful to the show. Check out the new ones here, along with previously-released items.

And what else is new in the world of Futurama? Well, as you probably already know, the show’s coming back for an all-new season. But with details scarce, Newsarama turned to voice actor Phil LaMarr (Hermes) to fill them in on what the new shows will bring! His answers weren’t exactly revelatory, but it’s always good to hear it’s actually happening.

Newsarama: What is the deal with the new season of Futurama? When is that starting up again?

Phil Lamarr: Not positive. I believe either Summer or Fall of this year. I mean, I don’t know for certain, but it should be ready. Just technically, from when we started recording to the amount of time it usually takes these things to get done. Whether they start airing when they’re ready, I don’t know.

Nrama: When did you guys start recording?

Lamarr: We started last fall. Fall of 2009…the new episodes, in my opinion, are the best yet. They’re really, really funny. Some of them are really, really thoughtful as well. The guys have come back to the show with renewed energy. The writers and producers. And they’re happy to be back, and know the world and the characters so well that they’re able to…it feels like they’re better at it. They’re able to do more with it than they were before.

Nrama: Any hints you can drop? Is there anything you’re allowed to say?

Lamarr: The question is, is there anything I remember? [laughs] They haven’t actually said, ‘Don’t say this.’ Are there any super surprises that come back? Hmm, well, I don’t want to ruin any of the guest stars. There are some topical episodes, but topical a thousand years in the future.

Nrama: Any returning characters we might not be expecting?

Lamarr: So far I don’t think there is anyone you wouldn’t be expecting, except maybe a Vice President or two. [laughs]

Also known as the M-113 Creature, the salt vampire was one of the creepiest creatures ever encountered by the crew of the original Enterprise. Though its salivorous species was known to be highly intelligent an quite calculating, the isolated individual first encountered by Kirk and Spock brought only madness and chaos with it and had to be killed by a sharp-shooting McCoy. As the universe of Star Trek expanded, though, we came to see more and more examples of its race and learn more–though they never became any less unnerving in appearance. Really, with looks like those, it was no wonder they needed employ telepathy to draw their victims in. But now, from Diamond Select and Art Asylum, you can get a creepy salt-sucker of your very own! But of course, going from Trek to Trek begs the question: what’s next? Well, while the upcoming Star Trek online is sure to keep fans busy, it’s going to be another 2 long years before we’re lucky enough to have a sequel to 2009’s incredible Star Trek revamp. In a recent interview with Wired magazine, Zachary Quinto gave Trek fans nightmares when he announced he was taking a two-year break from Star Trek.

I’m stepping away from Star Trek for at least two years — no movies, no conventions, no anything for a while. I want to invite [my fans] along with me on my journey, which is going to take them out of their comfort zone and into other areas and other styles of storytelling.

Quinto’s “stepping away” has led to confusion and speculation amongst his fans, so Quinto tried to ease their worries over whether he would return as Spock in an announcement on his website.

i have been inundated with questions and confusion about a comment i made during an interview with wired — about the new atari Star Trek online game — in which i said i am stepping away from Trek for the next two years. obviously i will be a part of any upcoming films… reprising my role as spock. what i meant was that in the meantime i won’t be making any public appearances related to the franchise – or doing any more auxiliary projects pertaining to the trek universe. i will be focusing my efforts on other projects and preparing to shoot the next film — which will be released in june of 2012… two years from now. hence the no Trek for two years remark. worry not trekkers. it was a misunderstanding of context. i am not spock. but i am spock. all at the same time.

As for Quinto’s next project, Deadline Hollywood reports the actor is set to appear as composer George Gershwin in a biopic that could be the next directorial project for Steven Spielberg. Doug Wright (Quills) wrote the script, which is one of three projects Spielberg is considering. Quinto is already working with an accent coach for a possible April shooting start.

Naturally, Chris comes with everything he requires, which is essentially the same supply as Sheva with differences in the weaponry (it helps to diversify when your enemies are as varied as the beasts roaming Africa in RE5). He looks as handsome as Sheva does beautiful, but what I really appreciate is the strength in both characters. Though there’s still a ways to go, I’d say that video games are definitely better than films in representing the fact that good looks are not enough and that it’s necessary to make characters believable as action heroes if they’re going to do the dirty work.

Peter Jackson is secretly working to adapt the Mortal Engines fantasy novels for the screen.

The hush-hush project is understood to be in early development, with work on the first of the four books under way, industry sources say.

Weta Workshops is also believed to be working on designs for the science fiction series, which features giant mobile cities.

A spokesman for Jackson did not deny the project was on the books yesterday, but said “any comment should come from Peter”.

Jackson, who is understood to have had the rights to the books for some time, was unavailable for comment.

The books, by Philip Reeve, are set in a post-apocalyptic world where cities have become giant vehicles and must consume each other to survive. Mortal Engines is the first book in the series, and has won a Nestle Smarties Book Prize and was shortlisted for the 2002 Whitbread Award.

The fantasy books are the latest in a series of adaptation projects Jackson has taken on.

His film adaptation of The Lovely Bones premiered in Wellington last week, and he is producing The Hobbit – the prequel to his highly successful Lord of the Rings trilogy – and Steven Spielberg’s version of the Belgian comic The Adventures of Tintin: The Secret of the Unicorn.

Jackson has also optioned the rights to the historic-fantasy Temeraire novels, which tell an alternative version of the Napoleonic Wars where tame dragons are used for aerial attacks.

I just started reading the first book and will review it in a later blog.  I am quite fascinated with the concepts in the book. Just imagine for a moment….a far-future age where cities move about hunting smaller mobile towns and dismantling those they catch for their raw materials….pretty interesting.

The popcorn has yet to be swept from the theatre isles for James Cameron’s winter blockbuster Avatar and already the director is announcing plans for sequels.

Cameron, known for his big budget franchises which include Alien and The Terminator, has told MTV he has plans for not one but two sequels for his new blue heroes.

The director, who was also responsible for the epic Titanic movie starring Leonardo DiCaprio and Kate Winslett, told the broadcaster that sequels were always part of the plan when he set about creating his hi-tech masterpiece.

“I have a trilogy-scaled arc of story right now, but I haven’t really put any serious work into writing a script,” he said.

However, the subsequent on screen adventures will hit screens sooner than the first part of the franchise as the technology is now already in place, Cameron explained.

“My next goal is to refine the technique, make it easier so it doesn’t take as long,” he added

“We were doing a lot of pioneering work on ‘Avatar.’ It wouldn’t have taken as long if we already knew exactly how to do it.”
