BARBARIAN HULK

July 22, 2012

Marvel Select is always bringing you the best and brightest of the Marvel Universe, but their real speciality is giving the star treatment to some overlooked members of the superhero and villain pantheons. And now, BARBARIAN HULK.

Sculpted by Jean St. Jean, this huge Hulk figure casts the not-so-jolly green giant as a barbarian with long, flowing hair, an animal-skin loincloth and a skull necklace. Based on his recent look, it’s a 10-inch beast and features an impressive 16 points of articulation. More support of the theory that everything looks tougher with a beard.

Montreal Comic Con : Post-Con Wrap-Up!

December 6, 2010

I headed down to the Montreal Comic Con yesterday and not only had a great time, but was able to snag a few Christmas deals for my geek-leaning friends. Not to mention seeing a number of great comic artists, taking in a great costume contest and meeting the occasional geek-celeb!

There were a ton of hugely talented artists present, including Tom Fowler, Marcus To and Francis Manapul, and they were selling prints and originals, plus doing the usual Con sketches for their adoring fans!

Francis Manapul

And though Iron Sheik was forced to cancel, Spike Spencer (voice actor best known for his work in Neon Genesis Evangelion) and Sam Witwer (Smallville, Battlestar Galactica, Dexter and Star Wars Unleashed) were there to make sure that the fanboys and fangirls still had plenty to get excited over.

Finally, the vendors were out in full force, there were Pokemon, Magic and Naruto tournaments and demos, plus some NCW Superhero wrestling and Star Wars replicas of a Landspeeder and, of course, fan-favourite droid R2-D2!

Now, with 2010 almost behind us, I can only look forward to next September and the 2-day Con extraordinaire that the 2011 MCC will bring!

THIS WEEKEND: The Montreal Mini Comic Con!

December 2, 2010

Good news for anyone looking to geek out this weekend! A miniature-sized version of the Montreal Comic Con hits Place Bonaventure on Sunday, December 5th! Naturally, you can expect artists, special guests and all kinds of great deals, so be sure to check it out this Sunday at 11am! For more info, just read on!

Montreal, November 24th, 2010Following the tremendous success of the September Montreal Comiccon, Place Bonaventure will welcome the first edition of the Montreal Mini-Comiccon, on Sunday, December 5th, 2010, a one-day-only event for fans of comics, sci-fi, manga, horror, anime, toys and collectibles. In addition to artists, entertainment celebrities and fun activities, the public will be able to browse through numerous specialized retailers and exhibitors to discover exciting and hard-to-find Christmas gifts.

The Mini-Comiccon will count amongst its guests actor Sam Witwer (Smallville, Star Wars, Unleashed, Battlestar Galactica, Dexter), anime movie voice actor Spike Spencer, comic book artists Marcus To (Red Robin) and Francis Manapul (The Flash), the cast and producers of the popular Montreal web series Heroes of the North and wrestling legend The Iron Sheik. The event will showcase amazing 1:1 scale Star Wars Landspeeder and R2-D2 replicas for unique photo opportunities, nCw superhero wrestling performances, Magic and CHUNIN (NARUTO) tournaments and a Pokemon game demo. And, as tradition dictates, the costume contest is expected once again to draw crowds, offering many prizes to the most creative outfits.

“When the September Comiccon exceeded our attendance expectations, we realized that Montreal should not have to wait an entire year for another show,” said co-founder Oscar Yazedjian. “The Mini-Comiccon is a perfect holiday excuse for fans to come together again, shop and have a great time.”

“We are especially pleased to see more and more families with children attending the shows,” added Alex La Prova, the other co-founder. Sharing our passion for comics and fantasy fiction and entertainment was one of the main reasons for creating the Comiccon.”

The Mini-Comiccon will also receive many professional and amateur artists, thrilled to share their work and know-how with art fans of all ages.

General admission tickets are $5 and kids under 8 come in for free. For additional information on guests and activities, the public is invited to visit www.montrealcomiccon.com.

Indie Gamers Get Ready to Party in Montreal!

November 7, 2010

In Montreal and looking for something to do on Tuesday night? Want to geek-out with the like-minded while listening to music, dancing and trying out some brand new indie games?

Well, here’s a suggestion from GameSetWatch:

Those of you heading up north for the Montreal International Gaming Summit next month should leave room in your schedule for The Prince of Arcade, an indie games showcase and party hosted by Mount Royal Game Society, Dirty Rectangles, and Babycastles.

From 8PM to 1AM on November 9th at the Eastern Bloc studio/exhibition space, you’ll be able to listen to live music, drink alcoholic beverages, and play indie games displayed with projectors. You can get in for $10, but if you have a MIGS pass you’ll only need to pay $5.

You can find more information and RSVP for The Prince of Arcade on this Facebook page. Perhaps we’ll hear more about what games will be there soon?

Montreal Comic Con: A Spotlight on Local Talent May 9th!

May 7, 2010

The Montreal Comic Con is definitely a small convention, but it tends to draw big talent and this Sunday, May 9th, should be no exception!

The Guest of Honour is Chris Claremont: Writer Chris Claremont has encountered more success than most writers ever dream of. His stories have achieved best-seller status, won numerous awards, and are trend-setters for the industry. Although best known for his work on Marvel Comic’s X-Men series, he has written other seminal characters such as Batman and Superman; originated several creator-owned series; is published throughout the world in many different languages; authored nine novels; and even had his first video game premier in Spring 2006. His work has touched millions.

Beyond that, this bite-sized, one day convention will be putting the focus on local talent! You can expect something bigger this summer, but it’s always great to see and support the local creators and Montreal is definitely a great place to do that, boasting a surprisingly large number of great artists doing some really impressive, sometimes world-renowned work.

Here’s the info:

Schedule and location
Sunday, May 9th, from 11:00am to 5:00pm
Place Bonaventure, room 200-N
800, rue de la Gauchetière Ouest, Montreal (Quebec) H5A 1K6
