Well, I’ve just gotten back from San Diego and I’m very pleased to say that it was an absolute blast, if a little lighter on actual comic content than I’m used to. Really, though, I suppose it’s just the way of things that TV and movies seem to have officially taken precedence over the comic book stuff and at least it’s bringing people into the show where they’ll discover the stuff they might have missed out on! Plus, with movies like Red and shows like The Walking Dead, it’s further proof that there’s a symbiotic relationship between the media forms and that is definitely a good thing.
But without further ado, I’ll get to the meat of this post, THE PICTURES! Take a look at some of the cool items, set pieces and costumes from the biggest con in the world!
And if you want a little more, be sure to check out our previous post on SDCC EXCLUSIVES!

GI Joe’s Duke is now available as a 1:6 scale figure from the folks at Sideshow. Still popular after forty-six years of the Hasbro-created franchise, GI Joe goes back to its 12-inch roots with this figure of the character Duke, created in 1983 and most recently portrayed by actor Channing Tatum in GI Joe: The Rise of Cobra.
This model is a throwback, though, and based not on any 2000s film, but on the grim-looking character traditionalists will know and love. The Duke 12-inch Figure boasts the following features:
* Fully articulated Pro male body Version 1.2 with 30+ points of articulation
* Duke portrait
* Undershirt
* Shirt
* Pants
* Boots
* Detailed belt
* Go Bag
* Utility belt
* Handgun pouch
* Helmet
* Goggles
* Water bottle
* Dog tags
* Medal
* Laser Rifle
* Rifle
* Rifle grenades x 6
* Pistol
* Pistol magazines x 2
* Grenades x 3
* Yellow smoke grenade x 1
* Red smoke grenade x 1
* Three sets of interchangeable hands
* 12-inch display base with G.I. Joe logo

Sideshow’s impressive work on all of their figures generally impresses, but sometimes they have works that seem to stand out in a crowd and this Storm Shadow figure is surely among them. Sideshow always shines when their figures’ elaborate outfits are the type that cover all the joints, which adds a level of realism difficult to attain when your character’s elbows have obvious plastic pegs. He stands 12 inches all told and boasts the following features:
* Fully articulated Prometheus male body with 30+ points of articulation
* Storm Shadow masked portrait
* Storm Shadow unmasked portrait
* Sashes with pockets
* Forearm Bracers
* Leg wraps
* Quiver
* Bow
* Arrows
* Ninja stars
* Long sword with scabbard
* Short sword with scabbard
* Nine interchangeable hands
* 12-inch display base with G.I. Joe logo

Of course, with Storm Shadow and Snake Eyes as the resident ninjas over in the world of G.I. Joe, one wonders when we’re going to find ourselves either rallying behind or at the mercy of some actual ninjas. Judging from an article over at Cracked.com, though, it’s going to be a while yet. Here’s an excerpt from their article “8 Amazing Stories of Ninja Failure”.
8. The Connecticut Ninja
The ninja is a creature of stealth and subtlety; he is a shadow that lives; a whisper in the night; a… guy screaming on a street corner and waving nunchucks around? A man in Vernon, Connecticut was arrested for loudly and repeatedly threatening to “beat up” Senator Joe Liebermann while dressed entirely in a black ninja outfit and brandishing a pair of nunchucks… at 11 o’clock in the morning.
What They Did Right:
Liebermann is an appropriate ninja target. He’s a famous turncoat–rich and reviled by the local peasants–but the appropriate ninja approach would be to sneak into his house, or ambush his caravan, or… send him nasty glances at a party and tell people his shoes look fat, or pretty much anything besides standing on a street corner at lunchtime and hollering about beating him up.
What They Did Wrong:
The black outfit is a staple of the ninja mythos: It conceals the ninja, making him one with the night. It is beautifully simple camouflage. However, its stealthy nature does not function at certain times . Those times are:
A. In Connecticut
B. 11 o’clock in the morning.
C. While screaming.
Also, police report that the subject was “belligerent and furious” until they pulled out bean bag guns and tasers, at which point the ninja in question “became polite and cooperative.” Man, if you’re just a ninja so long as nobody launches a hacky-sack into your junk at 200-mph, then you, sir, are no ninja.

We’ve just gotten a new series of G.I. Joe: The Rise of Cobra action figures in-stock and ready to be shipped. The first collection of the 4th wave includes favourites like Kamakura, Night Adder, Nano-Viper and more! They join the awesome characters already released in conjunction with the hit summer flick. You can check out the whole collection here or by clicking the pic above!
But if you’re a discerning fan or collector, you might be wondering whether to get into the new line or, more specifically, which figures are are the best of the best! Well, wonder no more.
SoHood.com presents their Ultimate G.I. Joe: The Rise of Cobra Toy Guide that helps you sift through the figures and figure out which ones to snag.
SoHood’s Edwin Diaz sorts through every single figure and rates them based on five points: Articulation and Pose ability, Durability, Color scheme paint job, G.I. Joe accessories, and Overall Design. He also includes the character descriptions from the toys themselves, meaning that even those a little rusty on their G.I. Joe Who’s Who can sift through the guide. Of Baronness, it is written:
Anastasia Decobray is as dangerous as she is beautiful. A master spy for COBRA and a powerful, high-ranking figure at M.A.R.S. Industries, she carries out her plans with icy efficiency.
So far, Night Adder and Pit Commander seem to be your best bets, both scoring perfect marks in every category! But if you really want to dare to compare, just head on over to SoHood.com!

GI-Joe Pizza Party
I’m so psyched about this movie and hopefully a bunch of other people are too because this Pizza Party counts on it! Just like our Transformers party, this GI Joe Party will go down about the same way. Everyone will meet here around 6:00pm. We’ll watch some old 80’s GI Joe stuff, drink some drinks, eat some eats, and play with GI Joes like it was 1986!
After we’ve had our fill, we’ll head on over to the Cineplex (located conveniently next to our Ottawa store) head right in, sit right down in our reserved seats, and watch the heck out of the new GI Joe movie! Woo-Hoo!
If this sounds appealing to you, even if you’re not a big GI Joe fan, just come on down to the store and plop $15 on the counter to get into the party. $15 includes your pizza, pop, reserved seat, and ticket, of course. The price went up slightly because we discovered we were a little short on our last event, but no matter! If you’re interested, please contact us either through email, phone, or asking in person.
Date: August 7th, 2009 at 6pm
Location:
Toys on Fire
130 Riocan Ave. Unit 3
Nepean, Ontario
K2J-5G4, Canada
Phone: 613-825-0688
Email: toysonfireott at yahoo.com

Mmmm….extra double cheese pizza with Jonas Brothers….what a great pizza topping combo! Please note that this pizza is greasy and oily and is not very filling….if you know what I mean. You do know what I mean….right?

Steve Bonanno, with The Joker, at his Legends Action Figures store on St. Hubert Street
By AL KRATINA, Special to the Montreal Gazette
To some, collecting action figures might seem a childish pursuit. Disclosing that this article is being typed in full view of an Edgar Allan Poe toy and an entire shelf of Batman villains will likely not change such people’s minds. But Montrealers can discover for themselves how grown-up toy collecting can be by visiting one of many local toy stores, or by checking out Toycon tomorrow at the Courtyard by Marriott hotel near Trudeau airport.
“(There’s) a little bit of something for everyone,” says David Mark, the organizer of the convention and owner of Outremont’s Toys on Fire retail store. The convention will feature 30 local action figure dealers selling everything from Hot Wheels to Spider-Man toys, as well as six tables dedicated to creations from the Montreal LEGO Club.
But as Mark explains, action figures don’t always revolve around comics and Saturday morning cartoons. Subjects range from hockey players to William Shakespeare to a semi-flayed man hanging from hooks and birthing what appears to be a boil of maggots, designed by horror author Clive Barker.
In fact, Steve Bonanno finds that his Montreal store, Legends Action Figures on St. Hubert St., attracts mainly the male 18-35 demographic.
Like Mark, Bonanno is passionate about action figures, and estimates he has more than 4,000 toys in his personal collection. “I opened the store, because my collection was getting too expensive,” he laughs, as I shop for Marvel Zombies Minimates, tiny undead comic characters that make my bookshelves resemble a decaying landscape of LEGO figures.
Bonanno and Mark agree the more popular toys are generally tied to new movies or TV shows, but nostalgic throwbacks are also well-liked.
“Everything from the ’80s properties, like GI Joe, Transformers, they all made a comeback in the last couple of years,” Bonanno says. “(But) Star Wars (toys) outsell everything else.”
But even those not particularly interested in pitting Cobra Commander and Starscream against a mob of Tuskan Raiders might be interested in “art toys.”
“An art toy is a (figure) that’s not based on a cartoon or a game,” says Olivier Petitpas, who opened his camiondepompiers store on Ontario St. in 2007. “It’s more of an art object than a product advertising a different (medium).”
Some art toys feature paint designs and accessories created by various artists, often noted for work in other media. Popular art toy creators include U.S.-based Frank Kozic, who once designed posters for the grunge movement, and Italian artist/clothing designer Simone Legno, whose Tokidoki brand makes everything look like the result of Hello Kitty mating with a robot.
But other toys are simply sold as blank figurines, and used as a canvas to create a one-of-a-kind art by the new owner. These are often displayed at contests or exhibitions, like the ones Petitpas occasionally holds at his store.
Art toys, Petitpas says, tend to attract a different crowd than other action figures, which is why Petitpas won’t be exhibiting at Toycon. But though the world of art toys might not overlap with other action figures, both can be equally appreciated by a mature audience. Or so I keep telling myself, and my Minimates.
Toycon was held Sunday, May 3rd, 2009 at the Courtyard Marriott Hotel, 7000 Place Robert-Joncas, from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Admission $4. Call 514-948-2627 or email montrealtoycon@gmail.com for more details on the next show.
