Fried Ice Cream Burger

September 21, 2011

Fried Ice Cream Burger

Unbind your belt. Go find your fat jeans. Load up on the Lipitor.

Last year, I went to the Florida State Fair and had the Krispy Kreme Cheeseburger. It became the must-have, hate-yourself-in-the-morning, can’t-wait-to-eat-it-again guilty pleasure.    So much soul-soothing sweetness. So much greasy goodness.   So darn … delicious.

This year…..we have the Ice Cream Burger.

Say hello to my little friend….made of Ice Cream with red Meat (and some pickles, mustard and ketchup).

This bad boy starts with a regular burger. No worries there. But nestled under the toasted bun and perched atop the pickle, lettuce, tomato, bacon and cheese toppings is a slab of ice cream coated in cinnamon and cornflakes that has taken a dip in the deep fryer for 10 to 15 seconds.

Looks gross. Sounds gross. Tastes …?

It’s like going to your favorite burger place.  You get that burger, you get that milkshake. You take a bite of burger and drink a bit of milkshake. It tastes just like that.  I couldn’t stop eating it after I took my first bite.

I also tried the Deep Fried Butter Stick but this burger takes the cake.

Heard people complain about the calories while I was gorging this bad boy.  Hey, you’re going to the fair, you’re gonna have fun. It’s fun to try new things, healthy or not.  Everything in moderation as the doctor recommends.

Moderation?  Where’s the fun in that?

Food Drive at Toys on Fire Ottawa

June 28, 2011

The Barrhaven Food Cupboard (BFC) is a program run by volunteers from Barrhaven United Church and other caring community members of Barrhaven. It provides food for families in need during the year. Its service area is Barrhaven.

Last Halloween Toys on Fire Ottawa customers helped to collect about $500 of food donations in just one day! This year we will have a bin at the store to accept your kind donations from June 27th to July 16th (Our 6th Anniversary Ottawa Party) and we are hoping to break last years record.  In fact, to help things along, we’re offering to give out ballots for our PS3 contest for every donation made in the store.  If you feel like going the extra mile and bring in 10 or more cans, we’ll give you 10% off of your purchase that day (only valid at Ottawa location).

Food banks like this one get a lot of great support throughout the year and especially during the holiday season. However, they do see a large decrease in donations during the summertime. We are helping to offset this shortage and get food to the families in need all year long. So please consider bringing a non-perishable donation the next time you stop by our Ottawa store.

BFC accepts the following items:

  • non-perishable, canned and packaged foods in original packaging
  • certain everyday-use household and personal care items, such as toothpaste, soaps, toothbrushes, toilet paper, facial tissues, and dishwasher and laundry detergent
  • baby diapers and baby food
  • cash donations

Urgently needed items:

  • Canned meats and fish
  • Canned stews and pasta
  • Rice (brown and white)
  • Canned fruits
  • Fruit juice
  • Cookies and snacks
  • Household supplies and personal care products, such as toothpaste, soaps, toothbrushes, toilet paper, facial tissues, dishwasher and laundry detergent, and cleaning supplies
  • Diapers (all sizes)

Taco Bell Lawsuit: Where’s the Beef?

January 27, 2011

taco bell lawsuit

Posted by Natalie Jimenez at CBSNews.com

We’ve all heard the urban tales about fast food giants making cheap meals out of unsavory ingredients like meal worms and headless chickens.

Well, now, Taco Bell is under the spotlight for allegedly questionable practices. An Alabama law firm has filed a class-action lawsuit against the chain saying the stuff they call “seasoned beef” is only about 36 percent meat.

The firm tested the “meat mixture” and found that it contained ingredients like water, wheat oats, soy lecithin, maltodrextrin, modified corn starch and an anti-dusting agent.

According to the complaint, Taco Bell does not meet the minimum requirements set forth by the USDA to label its product as “beef” and uses false advertising.

Here is the official reply from Taco Bell:

STATEMENT REGARDING CLASS ACTION LAWSUIT – January 26, 2011
“The lawsuit is bogus and filled with completely inaccurate facts. Our beef is 100% USDA inspected, just like the quality beef you would buy in a supermarket and prepare in your home. It then is slow-cooked and simmered with proprietary seasonings and spices to provide Taco Bell’s signature taste and texture. Our seasoned beef recipe contains 88% quality USDA-inspected beef and 12% seasonings, spices, water and other ingredients that provide taste, texture and moisture. The lawyers got their facts wrong. We take this attack on our quality very seriously and plan to take legal action against them for making false statements about our products. There is no basis in fact or reality for this suit and we will vigorously defend the quality of our products from frivolous and misleading claims such as this.”

What is in Taco Bell’s recipe for seasoned beef?

“We’re cooking with a proprietary recipe to give our seasoned beef flavor and texture, just like you would with any recipe you cook at home.

For example, when you make chili, meatloaf or meatballs, you add your own recipe of seasoning and spices to give the beef flavor and texture, otherwise, it would taste just like unseasoned ground beef. We do the same thing with our recipe for seasoned beef.

Our recipe for seasoned beef includes ingredients you’d find in your home or in the supermarket aisle today:

• 88% USDA-inspected quality beef
• 3-5% water for moisture
• 3-5% spices (including salt, chili pepper, onion powder, tomato powder, sugar, garlic powder, cocoa powder and a proprietary blend of Mexican spices and natural flavors).
• 3-5% oats, starch, sugar, yeast, citric acid, and other ingredients that contribute to the quality of our product.

Our seasoned beef contains no “extenders” to add volume, as some might use. For more information about our ingredients go to http://www.tacobell.com.”
