The popular Ame-Comi series from DC Direct takes your favourite heroines and villainesses of the DC Universe and gives them an anime makeover. Each one is a statue or action figures and manages to make the costumes even more impractical than usual, but at least makes them look very, very cool. And now, it’s not just for the ladies anymore. Batman has joined the party.

I admit that I’m a person so dedicated to the look of Batman and his universe that playing Arkham Asylum included having to overcome the wildly different outfit they forced on Harley Quinn. But nevertheless, I can admire some different interpretations and this does at least fit in with the rest of the series Ame-Comi. He stands about 8 inches tall, though he is hunched over, and comes handpainted with a stylish stand for display on a toyshelf. Despite the name, though, he is more PVC figurine than action figure, as he is not articulated.
Though he definitely has the coolest look of any of the DC men, we can only hope that this is a trend that continues to see the likes of Superman, Green Lantern and–with luck–The Joker.

The Bakugan craze is still going strong, but the folks at Spinmaster are still branching out to create new ways to enjoy the world of the show/game. For the first time, they’ve released a four item collection of 6-inch figures based on the creatures from the game. The first line, which will surely be joined by more if it’s even a fraction as successful as their BB sales, includes Reaper, Blade Tigrerra, Dragonoid and Delta Dragonoid II.

You can take a look at the new figures in our Bakugan section over at CmdStore!

I know that I grew up on Mario games: while I missed out on most of the NES stuff since I was just slightly too young for it, one of my first major forays into the video game world was with Super Mario World, which revolutionized the world of side-scrollers forever. The levels were complex and a heck of a lot of fun, the design far brighter and more interesting than anything that had come before it. Even the fact that it had secret worlds, bonus levels and alternate level endings (remember those keys?) really set it apart from the competition and then it was on for a crop of new side-scrollers like the Mario sequels or the Donkey Kong Country franchise. Really fun stuff.
And while Mario has strayed from the original formula in games like Super Mario RPG: Legend of the Seven Stars by Squaresoft, the Mario sports series, the Wii-based Mario Galaxies 1 & 2 and a ton more titles, it’s always fun to get back to basics and enjoy some revamped nostalgia.
Which is exactly what the new Super Mario Bros. Wii has brought the world! Here’s a review from The Sydney Morning Herald…
Returning to his side-scrolling roots, Nintendo’s red-capped mascot has finally given Wii owners a taste of the nostalgic gameplay for which he is renowned.
Rather than a Mario-by-the-numbers remake, this fresh instalment brings with it some Wii-specific touches.
While the on-screen charm and chaos will be familiar to Mario fans, the chance to play co-operatively is a first for this decades old gaming franchise and it’s both a blessing and a curse, depending on your choice of gaming companions.

While it’s possible to play the game alone as Mario, up to three friends can jump into the action at any point, which can be both exhilarating and, at times, frustrating. One minute you’ll be working together to reach hidden areas and items, then a moment later you’ll be screaming at each other over stolen power-ups, being pushed off ledges or left behind.
The game is designed to be played with the Wii Remote held horizontally and operated like a traditional controller, plus the Wii’s Nunchuk controller is also supported for those who prefer analog controls. The motion-sensing feature of the Wii Remote is put to good use, activating certain actions when it’s shaken or tilted, though, thankfully, this option is not over-used.
Veterans of this series can expect some gruelling, though rewarding, challenges in the later levels, while inexperienced players can, for the first time, take advantage of the new Super Guide feature, in which the game offers to complete difficult sections automatically. As a penalty, however, all-important star coins, which are needed to unlock later levels, are not collected during this time.
While this latest instalment doesn’t feel as innovative as earlier releases and an online component to play friends afar would have embellished the game further, New Super Mario Bros. Wii remains a solid addition to this much-loved series.
If you want to pick up the game, you can snag it over on Amazon.com right here–it’s currently the NUMBER ONE video game on the site! Snag it: New Super Mario Bros for the Nintendo Wii

Naruto is one of the many animes to make its way across the ocean and find a place in the hearts and minds of audiences across North America. And with the coming of such shows, there is bound to be the coming of merchandise.
Fortunately, given the oft-discerning tastes of anime fans when it comes to the particular look of the series, the merchandise is generally of a very high quality and the Naruto figures we’ve got over at CmdStore.com are no exception. Each one is brilliantly designed and sculpted, ranging in size from 3 to 12 inches and fully capturing the awesome dynamism of the hit show!
Check out Naruto and Deidara in the first series of new toys already available for pre-order!

They’ll soon be joined by Gaara, Kakashi, Itachi and Sasuke, all of which’ll be shipping later down the line but can already be pre-ordered.

For a film to go from mere cult hit to a true cult classic, it doesn’t have to win any popularity contests, nor does it have to creep its way into the mainstream. Rather, the test that will determine the films that can call themselves true “cult classics” is the test of time. In ten years, will its fans still embrace it with the same fervour? Twenty years? Thirty? Films like Evil Dead, Gremlins, Flash Gordon and a host of others seemed to already have cemented their place in the annals of cult film history, but we can look forward to a future of many more fringe movies kept alive by fans.
And of course, when fans want to keep something alive, it isn’t only the production and distribution companies that respond: the toy-makers get involved, too! Which means that action figure lines like NECA’s Cult Classic collection probably won’t be slowing down anytime soon!
So far, they’ve already released more than eight sets of toys, ranging from characters like American Psycho’s Patrick Bateman and Silence of the Lambs’ Hannibal Lecter to Die Hard’s John McClane and the eponymous Shaun of the Dead. But now, over at CmdStore.com, you can find the latest sets of toys, plus a brand new series available for pre-order!
The new group of figures is known as “The Iconic Series” and for good reason: here are five characters who have not only withstood the test of time, but have become a part of a lexicon beyond that of film students or superfans. Even those less than crazy about non-mainstream film will definitely be familiar with these five: a Gremlin (Brain), Hellraiser’s Pinhead, Halloween’s Michael Myers, Beetlejuice and The Crow’s Eric Draven. For those merely seeking their favourite, these 6-inch figures can be purchased individually, but collectors can also pick ‘em up as a set. Just click the link below to take a look!

Shipping later this month, you can now pre-order the next wave of Kingdom Hearts toys from Square-Enix and Formation Arts. Unlike previous waves, this one doesn’t feature articulated figures, instead creating statues with bases that capture not only a particular character, but items and decor that bring to the pieces the mood of the game.
This series unites Sora, Minnie Mouse and fan favourite Jack Sparrow, who lounges atop a treasure chest. They look great on display and make a very cool addition to any player’s toy shelf. They can be purchased individually or as a set of three (for a savings of $5.90). Check ‘em out!

When he opened a doughnut shop in 1964, Tim Horton didn’t plan to lay the foundation for a Canadian institution. But that’s exactly what he did.
When he opened a small restaurant in Hamilton, Ont., in 1964, NHL star Tim Horton planned to sell coffee, doughnuts and a few of his own culinary delights. He didn’t plan to lay the foundation for a Canadian institution. But that’s exactly what he did.
A year after he opened that first store on Ottawa Street North, former Hamilton policeman Ron Joyce took over the fledgling store and opened up two more. He and Horton became full partners in 1967.
Early on the morning of February 21, 1974, Horton was driving on the Queen Elizabeth Way from Toronto to his home in Buffalo after the Sabres had played in Toronto the night before, in his De Tomaso Pantera sports car, a gift from Sabres’ GM George “Punch” Imlach. He was negotiating a curve on the QEW where it crosses over Twelve Mile Creek in St. Catharines when he lost control and hit a concrete culvert. The impact flipped the vehicle and Horton, who was not wearing a seat belt, was ejected. Horton was reported dead on arrival at the local hospital.
Not long after Horton’s death, Joyce offered Lori Horton (Tim’s widow) $1 million for her shares in the chain, which included 40 stores by that time. Once she accepted his offer, Joyce became the sole owner. Years later, Mrs. Horton decided that the deal between her and Joyce was not fair and took the matter to court. Mrs. Horton lost the lawsuit in 1993, and was declined for appeal in 1995. Lori died in 2000. Tim and Lori left four daughters, Jeri-Lyn (Horton-Joyce), Traci (Simone), Kim and Kelly. Jeri-Lyn married Ron Joyce’s son Ron Joyce Jr. and owns a store in Ontario.
Joyce expanded the chain in the following years, ultimately giving Canada more donut shops per capita than any other country.
In 1995, Wendy’s International acquired the chain and merged the two companies.
As part of the deal, Joyce became the largest single shareholder of Wendy’s, even larger than the chain’s founder Dave Thomas. Joyce retired soon after.
Wendy’s sold part of Tim Hortons operations in a public offering in 2006, and distributed remaining shares to shareholders later that year.
Tim Hortons kept its operational headquarters in Oakvillle, Ont., but incorporated in Delaware.
The chain continued to expand across Canada and into a handful of U.S. states. In the summer of 2009, it opened some stores in New York City – including one at Madison Square Garden, where Horton once played as a member of the New York Rangers.
Today, the chain is the fourth largest publicly traded quick service restaurant chain in North America, and the largest in Canada. It has 3,475 system-wide restaurants, including 2,939 in Canada and 536 in the United States.
The menu at Timmie’s, as it is affectionately known by Canadians, has expanded along with the chain. The chain served just coffee and doughnuts for its first decade in business. But since the mid 1970s, it has been adding items to the menu. It now offers everything from Timbits to flavoured cappuccino and chili.
McFarlane Toys is releasing a NHL hockey figure of Tim Horton. You can reserve your figure from Cmdstore.com. NHL Legends Series 8 (featuring Tim Horton) to be released in October of 2009.
I will take a Large Double Double….and a six inch Tim Horton figure….please!
