Batman: The Brave and the Bold Figures

March 5, 2010

Batman: The Brave and the Bold is everything that the 90s Batman Animated Series wasn’t: light-hearted, bright-coloured and occasionally musical. But despite being a major departure from what Batfans have come to know and love in past years, it has managed to find a place in the hears of the new generation and proven itself to be a great entry into the Batman mythos–even with the song-and-dance numbers of Neil Patrick’s guest appearance.

Now, Mattel has released its first line of 5- and 6-inch figures based on the hit show and there are 10 figures in all, including several variations on the Dark Knight himself, Solomon Grundy and Plastic Man. Plus, you can find the Batcycle there, too, giving the world’s greatest detective the world’s coolest motocycle. Check ‘em out!

New from DC Direct: Superman and Supergirl Action Figure 2-Pack

March 4, 2010

Based on the art of the late, great Michael Turner, DC Direct has released two new figures from Turner and Jeph Loeb’s SUPERMAN/BATMAN: SUPERGIRL. Telling the story of Batman and Superman’s team-up to rescue Supes’ beloved cousin from the evil Darkseid, it was a pivotal work in the Supergirl mythos and more than deserving of toy representation.

The Superman figure stands approximately 6.75″ high, while Supergirl stands 6.5″ and the set also includes a copy of the 160+ page Loeb/Turner work that inspired the figures. That makes it a great buy not only for fans, but for anyone looking to discover unread tales from the DC Universe.

And if you still need more Supergirl in your life, check out the always-incredible Project Rooftop for a new batch of awesome superhero redesigns. Artist Cory Walker has Supergirl Collection you’ve really gotta see to believe.

JLA Classified Action Figures – Series 3 Pre-Orders

March 2, 2010

There are some new JLA Classified figures headed our way and available for pre-order now. Check out the 6-inch renderings of Green Lantern, Superman Red, The Atom and Zoom over at Cmdstore.com. It’s worth checking out for any DC Fans seeking the perfect figure to complete their character collection.

And in another stroke of good luck for fans, I was checking out Kotaku (again) when I caught sight of a headline boasting SCREENS FROM AN UNRELEASED JUSTICE LEAGE VIDEO GAME! Check this out:

Is DC Comics’ Justice League getting a video game adaptation to go along with the George Miller directed, big budget feature film?

While the big screen version of Justice League may be experiencing a bumpy ride in its trip to theatres, it appears, based on a batch of screen shots sent our way by an anonymous tipster, that the video game is already in production. While the majority of the shots feature game environments, logos for characters like Batman and Wonder Woman can be seen in some. The Flash and what appears to be Wonder Woman appear in others.

Batman Ame-Comi Action Figure

February 25, 2010

The popular Ame-Comi series from DC Direct takes your favourite heroines and villainesses of the DC Universe and gives them an anime makeover. Each one is a statue or action figures and manages to make the costumes even more impractical than usual, but at least makes them look very, very cool. And now, it’s not just for the ladies anymore. Batman has joined the party.

I admit that I’m a person so dedicated to the look of Batman and his universe that playing Arkham Asylum included having to overcome the wildly different outfit they forced on Harley Quinn. But nevertheless, I can admire some different interpretations and this does at least fit in with the rest of the series Ame-Comi. He stands about 8 inches tall, though he is hunched over, and comes handpainted with a stylish stand for display on a toyshelf. Despite the name, though, he is more PVC figurine than action figure, as he is not articulated.

Though he definitely has the coolest look of any of the DC men, we can only hope that this is a trend that continues to see the likes of Superman, Green Lantern and–with luck–The Joker.

Blackest Night Figures: Re-Stocked!

February 16, 2010

The first series of DC Direct’s Blackest Night figures sold out very quickly, likely a reflection of the DC arc’s popularity in the comic book world. Readers and GL fans alike were thrilled to see the first series, which looked a little like this:

(The blacked-out space was, at the time, reserved for Black Lantern Earth-2 Superman, but you can now see how the big fella looks right here)

These figure, in case you missed them, are now RE-STOCKED! That means those unlucky enough to come too late can grab a Boodikka of their very own.

And when you’re done with this arc, look out for the next big thing in the DC Universe: Brightest Day! Wired.com reports!

DC Comics’ all-star limited series Blackest Night housed more war, zombies and darkness than even the Dark Knight could stomach. But that doesn’t mean DC’s follow-up series, Brightest Day, is going to be all warm and fuzzy when it lands in April.

“Brightest Day is not a banner or a vague catch-all direction for the DC Universe, it is a story,” writer of both series Geoff Johns explained Thursday on DC’s blog The Source. “Nor is Brightest Day a sign that the DC Universe is going to be all about ‘light and brighty’ superheroes.”

Not that there’s anything wrong with the light approach. It has been enlightening and entertaining in the savvy and sometimes surreal television series Batman: The Brave and the Bold. And while Blackest Night showed off Johns’ uncanny ability to dream up gripping worlds bursting with ultraviolence, it was nevertheless soaked with overkill.

A break from that desensitization could work wonders. Aquaman will get the treatment next, as David Finch’s cover of Brightest Day’s second issue (pictured) illustrates.

“Brightest Day is about second chances,” Johns said. “I think it’s been obvious from day one that there are major plans for the heroes and villains from Aquaman to take center stage in the DC Universe, among many others, post-Blackest Night.”

Tauren Hunter Korg Highmountain: New World of Warcraft Figure!

February 11, 2010

World of Warcraft Fan? Action Figure collector? If you answered yes to both (or just the first one and don’t mind being converted!), then we have yet another piece of good news for you with the arrival of a brand new deluxe figure.

In DC Direct’s World of Warcraft line, “deluxe” usually implied “huge!” and this new item is no exception. Check out Korg Highmountain!

Pretty big (a full 9 inches) and pretty intimidating, Korg’s design easily implies that he is built to destroy anything that stands in his way. Almost as wide as he is tall, he wields his massive weapon as though it were made of matchsticks. His expression is as vicious as the rest of him and it’s definitely a cool piece for any WoWer.

And in cuter news, 1up.com reports that you’ll soon be able to get your hands on a softer, cuddlier Warcraft collection, Blizzard’s own version of the incredibly popular Webkinz.

World of WarCraft’s pets are about to get a bit more tangible. The digital critters will soon be entering the real world via a new line of plush look-a-likes, which will come complete with a download code.

According to the World of WarCraft community site, the new line will include the Wind Rider Cub and the Gryphon Hatchling. The plush toys will come with a non-combat, account-bound pet to add to your menagerie.

The pets aren’t available yet, but both Horde and Alliance players will be able to pick them up when they hit the online store. In the meantime, there’s always Lil’ K.T. and the Pandaren Monk.

The current pets will run you $10.00. Expect the plush toys to cost a little bit more.

Just in time for Valentine’s Day: Joker and Harley Quinn Figure Set

February 11, 2010

Happy Valentine’s Day!

Single or coupled up, this might actually be the best way to celebrate love this February 14th or beyond: a set including the most twisted love story ever to appear in DC Comics (although I did once pick up a comic in which Clayface fell for a mannequin…), Harley Quinn and The Joker.

Featuring repaints of the best-slash-most-popular figures of the two (DCU Harley and Alex Ross’ Joker), the set is sure to find a place in the hearts and on the shelves of anyone who has appreciated the love that was was born on the awesome animated series in the 90s.

Better yet, the pair comes with Paul Dini and Bruce Timm’s Eisner Award-winning graphic novel, MAD LOVE, which provides a glimpse into the depths of insanity, obsession and backwards affection that has come to define the pairing. Years ago, some might have scoffed at the suggestion of introducing a sidekick for the Clown Prince of Crime, but ever since Harley first appeared, it’s felt like she was there the whole time. Check out this set and pick it up for your puddin’ today!

World of Warcraft Figures: Series 6

February 9, 2010

DC Direct’s World of Warcraft figures have already shown themselves to be an impressive line, featuring great sculpting and paintwork and generally being among the first of DC Direct’s items to really stand out from their previous licensing deals (the ones they still have with companies like Mattel–which perennially disappoint). The detail is awesome and even the articulation rarely suffers for design.

So far there have been five series of regular figures, plus premium figures and box sets and all of them have seen great sales among fans of the game, who number in the millions and are often just the kinds of people who can appreciate a well-made toy.

And lucky for them, we’ve put up the pre-orders for the next wave, which includes three new figures and ships in March. Check out our entire World of Warcraft Regular Figure section, featuring series 6’s Magni Bronzebeard, Gibzz Sparklighter and Sylvanas Windrunner, available together or as a set.
