James Cameron has all but promised that the upcoming sci-fi fantasy, AVATAR, will change the face of cinema as we know it. Though he has offered very few clues about the film itself or the story it tells, his words have made many a critic doubt him and many a fan drool at the prospect of a revolutionary tale from the Terminator creator. Personally, I’m a little on the fence about it as the hype has reached such incredible heights that almost no film could ever hope to live up to it in the eyes of the future watchers. But we’ll see, right?
The film stars Sam Worthington (Terminator Salvation, Clash of the Titans), Zoe Saldana (Star Trek, Vantage Point), Michelle Rodriguez (LOST, Resident Evil), Sigourney Weaver (Alien, Galaxy Quest) and a cast of other top-tier talent.
Before the opening in December 18th, you can already grab some action figures from the film, including a number of strange and wonderful creatures alongside the more mundane humans. Those avoiding spoilers will likely be very confused by some of the items included in Mattel’s toy collection, but it’ll all become clear soon and, until then, just enjoy some very cool-looking items.

There are new Ame-Comi figures over at CmdStore.com, courtesy of the awesome folks at DC Direct. Joining the already varied line are new versions of Catwoman (this time in her classic green and purple colour scheme rather than the Darwyn Cooke style leather and goggles) and Batgirl in her latest, darker incarnation. Both of the new figures look as amazing as the ones that came before them and make proud additions to an epic collection.

You can also pre-order figures of Batman, Robin, Wonder Woman and Wonder Girl.

For a film to go from mere cult hit to a true cult classic, it doesn’t have to win any popularity contests, nor does it have to creep its way into the mainstream. Rather, the test that will determine the films that can call themselves true “cult classics” is the test of time. In ten years, will its fans still embrace it with the same fervour? Twenty years? Thirty? Films like Evil Dead, Gremlins, Flash Gordon and a host of others seemed to already have cemented their place in the annals of cult film history, but we can look forward to a future of many more fringe movies kept alive by fans.
And of course, when fans want to keep something alive, it isn’t only the production and distribution companies that respond: the toy-makers get involved, too! Which means that action figure lines like NECA’s Cult Classic collection probably won’t be slowing down anytime soon!
So far, they’ve already released more than eight sets of toys, ranging from characters like American Psycho’s Patrick Bateman and Silence of the Lambs’ Hannibal Lecter to Die Hard’s John McClane and the eponymous Shaun of the Dead. But now, over at CmdStore.com, you can find the latest sets of toys, plus a brand new series available for pre-order!
The new group of figures is known as “The Iconic Series” and for good reason: here are five characters who have not only withstood the test of time, but have become a part of a lexicon beyond that of film students or superfans. Even those less than crazy about non-mainstream film will definitely be familiar with these five: a Gremlin (Brain), Hellraiser’s Pinhead, Halloween’s Michael Myers, Beetlejuice and The Crow’s Eric Draven. For those merely seeking their favourite, these 6-inch figures can be purchased individually, but collectors can also pick ‘em up as a set. Just click the link below to take a look!

The second series of Justice League International figures has now arrived! The first series consisted of Ice, Black Canary, G’Nort and, my personal favourite, Batman, and the second series brings us Fire, Martian Manhunter, Blue Beetle and the ever-popular Booster Gold. This year’s Comic Cons have been awash in Booster GoldĀ Fan Club t-shirts, which were also seen on the cover of Booster Gold #23, modeled by Blair Butler of G4TV fame.
I can’t say I’m entirely certain why Booster’s caught on this way, but as he still holds the title of “The Greatest Superhero You’ve Never Heard Of”, there are going to have to be a lot more shirts to get this guy out there.

Back by popular demand, Series 9 of the DC Universe collection from DC Direct has been re-stocked and is back on our shelves. So if you were waiting on your favourite member of the series 9 crew, your time has come.
Wildcat, Green Arrow, Black Canary, Deadshot and The Flash are just a few of the figures in this collection of DC Heroes and Villains. Each toy comes with one piece of the massive Build-a-Figure. This time out, you can construct a terrifying rendering of the the toxic menace, Chemo. Doing so, of course, means that you will be joining the ranks of the most terrifying supervillains of all time, but as long as you’re prepared, we can supply you.
The one exception to the re-stock is the comic version of DC’s MANTIS. But never fear! Though he hasn’t yet arrived, we’re expecting a new shipment next week!

We’ve still got some of our exclusive First-Appearance Sabretooth figures left. From the Marvel Select collection, these figures stand about 7 or 8 inches tall and feature amazing sculpting and a great paint job reflecting Sabretooth’s original look from his first appearance in a 1977 issue of Iron Fist (as “Sabre-Tooth”).
We brought him to Fan Expo, but if you weren’t able to make it, you can order him here or by clicking his pic above. This one’s a great find for collectors and you can only get it from us!

Meanwhile, we’ve juuuuuust uploaded our FanExpo pics, so here’s a look at how we spent our weekend!

CNN.com reports that a meth ring has been using comic books to launder the money they get for their illegal drugs. Among the comics they used were Superman and Batman titles, which is of course distressing to me: Neither Batsy nor Supes would ever want to be associated with the very kind of crime they fight so hard to stop. But of course, too few criminals are well-versed in the morality of the DC heroes, so maybe the only lesson they’ll learn will be coming from the arresting officers.
I hope Commissioner Gordon was involved.
DENVER, Colorado (CNN) — Investigators in Colorado say they have broken up a massive methamphetamine ring in the Denver area that distributed pounds of the dangerous drug every week and laundered the profits using collectible comic books.
Aaron Castro and his brother were the leaders of the methamphetamine ring, authorities say.
“To launder the money you have to use something that is quick and convenient,” Colorado Attorney General John Suthers said at a news conference Monday. “And in this case, they used classic comic books.”
While arresting the alleged ringleaders, brothers Aaron and Alfonzo Castro, law enforcement officers seized about 100 boxes of first-edition collectible comic books. Investigators say one title alone is worth $3,500 and the total collection of comics is worth half a million dollars.
“It appeared they were working on a startup company for high-end comic books,” said Don Quick, the district attorney in Adams County near Denver.
Quick said the seized comic books included some first-edition Superman and Batman titles. The fragile, vintage comics were stored in plastic bags for protection.
According to a grand jury indictment released Monday, the Castro brothers arranged for weekly, multiple-pound shipments of the meth from Phoenix, Arizona. The brothers then distributed the drugs to a network of runners that made deliveries to dealers around the Denver area.

(What’s cookin’, good-lookin’? Answer: Meth.)
Suthers says Castro brothers sometimes used females “as drug mules by having them hide methamphetamine inside their vaginal cavities.” These women would then deliver the meth to a series of houses, and then lower-level dealers would distribute the drug.
“It’s a tawdry piece of information, but it’s a big part of what this group was doing,” he said.
These same runners also collected money from dealers and delivered it to the Castro brothers. Suthers said the drugs most likely were manufactured in Mexico, and each month’s shipments had a street value of about $2 million.
The indictment details 145 drug possession and distribution charges from October 2008 to earlier this month. The Castros and 39 other people are listed as defendants. The Castro brothers and their top runners are also charged with racketeering.
Of the 41 defendants, 40 are in custody. The Castros are being held in the Adams County jail on $1 million bail each. It is unclear if they have attorneys.

To some, anime is the worst thing to happen to the comic book world, infiltrating it with an unwelcome aesthetic and rabid fanbase the non-manga-readers want no part of. But to others, anime complements the world of Western heroes and brings the characters to life in a completely new way while still maintaining the core sensibilities.
These are toys for the second group.

From DC Direct, we’ve got the Ame-Comi statuettes and figures, featuring the women of DC (oh, and Batman as the lone male) like you’ve never seen them before. Wonder Woman, Catwoman, Huntress, Poison Ivy, Harley Quinn and more! They’re all here in this deluxe collection featuring the work of some truly talented designers. Click the pics to take a look at the whole collection, but first, here’s one of the more recent figures featuring a wild revamp for the Dark Knight:
