The Montreal Comic Con + The ToyCon!

September 23, 2009

The Montreal Comic Con has now come and gone and it’s safe to say it was a huge success. A small, intimate convention pulling around 2500 attendees, it was an absolute blast featuring some of the most awesome artists (Darwyn Cooke, Mike Allred, Karl Kershl and Herb Trimpe just to name a few), stellar guests (both the Hulk and Lou Ferrigno were in attendance), cool companies (Eidos showed off Arkham Asylum and brought giveaways) and more. With next year shaping up to be even bigger, we at CmdStore.com can’t wait to attend!

And until then, I’ll be looking forward to taking part in our upcoming show, the Montreal ToyCon. Featuring a ton of retailers selling the best of the best figures and collectibles, awesome LEGO and art showcases, plus appearances by the 501st Legion and dozens of other cosplayers, it’s definitely worth the trip down.

The Montreal ToyCon takes place October 18th, 2009 at the Courtyard by Marriott, from 10am to 5pm. Tickets are only $4, with kids 5 and under getting in free.

For more details, check out the official Montreal ToyCon site!

And before I sign off, here’s a look at the fun we had this past weekend at the Montreal Comic Con.   There were comic books, toys,  creators, cosplayers and more!

Fan Expo 2009: Our Exclusive and THE PICS!

September 1, 2009

First Appearance Marvel Select Sabretooth

We’ve still got some of our exclusive First-Appearance Sabretooth figures left. From the Marvel Select collection, these figures stand about 7 or 8 inches tall and feature amazing sculpting and a great paint job reflecting Sabretooth’s original look from his first appearance in a 1977 issue of Iron Fist (as “Sabre-Tooth”).

We brought him to Fan Expo, but if you weren’t able to make it, you can order him here or by clicking his pic above. This one’s a great find for collectors and you can only get it from us!

Comic-Con Pics (Part One)

August 4, 2009

Finally back from Comic Con and I’ve brought a ton of pics with me!  This year’s SDCC was absolute madness and a great introduction for a newbie like me. I’ve been to other Cons, but, naturally, San Diego’s is by far the largest and the most star-studded. With rumours of it moving to Vegas next year, I wonder what the future holds for the convention (And having just been to Vegas, I also wonder how those in hot costumes will manage in the Nevada sun), but for now here’s a look at some of the pictures of myself and others enjoying the awesomeness that is SDCC.

The Montreal Comic Con: June 7th, 2009! Plus, Montreal Toycon!

May 21, 2009

I just got an e-mail informing me that there’ll be a Montreal Comic Con in just a couple weeks! It’s being held at Place Bonaventure on Sunday June 7th from 11am to 5pm and features piles and piles of comics, action figures and collectibles, clubs, costuming and a selection of national and international artists like Mike and Laura Allred, Herb Trimpe, Mark Texeira, Michael Golden and Dale Eaglesham. Tickets are a mere $3.

And coming up after the summer’s over, check out the next Montreal Toy Con at the Courtyard by Marriott Montreal Airport.

Once again, it’ll feature the hottest toys around, plus vintage items for collectors. And since it’s October, why not join in with the costumed fun and dress up as your favourite character? There’ll be a ton of Cosplayers present, as usual, so don’t miss out!

The Toronto Comic Arts Festival

May 12, 2009

This weekend, I was lucky (and awesome) enough to make it down to the Toronto Comic Arts Festival, a celebration of sequential art and storytelling by some of the most awesome talent in the industry, from graphic novels to webcomics. I consider all these conventions a warm-up for my planned trip to July’s San Diego Comic Con, where I intend to be much less shy and awe-struck in the presence of those I really and truly admire.

I met a lot of people there, including a few friends, and ended up spending far too much money on comics, but with absolutely no regrets. Here’s a little list of what I was lucky enough to snag, with links to the artists/writers themselves. I’ll leave out the biggest names (once I say that Bryan Lee O’Malley was there for Scott Pilgrim and I picked up Grant Morrison’s Seaguy at Cameron Stewart’s table) since you already know ‘em, but here are some more. Definitely a good group to check out if you’re looking for the next or current “Big Thing”.

Kate Beaton

Kate Beaton’s work represents some of the most consistently funny, entertaining and surprisingly informative webcomic-ry being done today. And the art is simple but PERFECT, incredibly expressive and a lot of fun. Amazing stuff.

Kelly Tindall
Besides being one of the most awesome people I’ve ever met, Mister Kelly Tindall is also one of the most imaginative, both in terms of art and writing. You can see his work in Image Comics’ Proof.

David Malki
David Malki’s unique use of public-domain Victoriana combined with his keen wit made me fall in love with Wondermark some time ago. He’s got a couple Wondermark collections, a short film and some prose under his belt, but it’s all brilliant and all funny.

R. Stevens

I’ve been reading Diesel Sweeties for years now and it’s still just as entertaining as its always been. Touted as an 8-bit Robot Romance, it’s sharp, clever, occasionally risque and a lot of fun to look at.

For more information, you can check out the official TCAF website! If you missed it this time around, make sure you make plans to check it out in 2010.

Toronto Fan Expo: August 28-30, 2009

May 7, 2009

Hobbystar’s Toronto Fan Expo is some ways off, happening August 28th to the 30th, but we at CmdStore have decided to head down there this summer with three booths of our very own. If you’re planning on attending, make sure to check us out. We’ll be selling all kinds of figures and toys, but the real gem of the collection will undoubtedly be this guy:

The CMDStore Exclusive Sabretooth figure from Marvel Select. We’re the only ones selling this brand new figure, which features the vicious Marvel villain rendered as he was in his very first appearance in Iron Fist #14 in 1977.

The guest list has yet to be released for this always-huge convention, but we’ll be sure to keep you updated the minute we find out! For now, check out the Fan Expo website here.
