Two pieces of Hobbit News

November 20, 2009

The One Ring (theonering.net) is a little concerned that Hellboy director Guillermo Del Toro could go kid-oriented when he directs the upcoming Hobbit movies. Personally, I don’t think anyone who’s seen The Devil’s Backbone, Pan’s Labyrinth or even Hellboy 1 or 2 would think Del Toro the type to go that way, so it’s clear TheOneRing is playing this one tongue-in-cheek, but the list it’s come up with is awesome. You can read the whole thing here, but here’s an excerpt…

3. Keep Leonard Nimoy Away From the Soundtrack!
Yes, Nimoy’s version of “Bilbo Baggins” is the greatest music video in history (except perhaps for the DaVinyls “I Touch Myself”). But it’s also exactly the wrong note for the new Hobbit movie.

This is exactly the light-hearted silliness that makes The Hobbit fun to read as a child, but hard to sit through in a feature-length film. Unless Nimoy plays Gandalf. No offense to Ian McKellen, but that would be awesome.

Naturally, they include this video as a chilling reminder…

And in other Hobbit news, remember those bones that were found a couple years back? Small and humanoid, they were dubbed ‘hobbits’ and had even archaeologists and their ilk scratching their heads. Well, a little bit of the mystery has been solved: They weren’t humans at all! The Mirror explains…

Hobbit-like creatures who lived 18,000 years ago were a lot less like us than we thought, say scientists.

Researchers have decided the 3ft 6ins tall tribe from the Indonesian island of Flores are an unknown sub-species of modern man. Their remains caused a sensation when unveiled five years ago and they were dubbed Hobbits after the elf-like creatures in JRR Tolkien’s Lord of the Rings.

Some researchers argued they were modern humans with a disorder called microcephaly accounting for their tiny brains.

But analysis of the most complete skeleton, of a female called Flo, suggests she was a different branch of human. Anthropologist Dr Karen Baab said: “Dwarfing syndromes and microcephaly bear no resemblance to the unique anatomy of Homo Floresiensis.”

It is thought the little folk were wiped out 12,000 years ago by a volcano.

And that’s all, it seems, for real-life Hobbit news and the fantasy Hobbit-news we’ll of course be keeping up on–especially when WETA starts sending out the merch! ‘Til then, we do have a wide selection of Lord of the Rings figures and collectibles still available, which of course feature a couple Hobbit/LOTR crossover characters. Look out for ‘em.

Aliens, Aliens and more Aliens.

October 26, 2009

Only slightly Halloweeny, the Geiger-style aliens from the amazing film franchise are awesome enough to blog about anyway. We’ve got a ton of Sideshow statues and figures both new and old that feature the original aliens from the first films and the new ones from the Aliens versus Predator franchise. Whatever you think of the films, there’s no denying that the folks at Sideshow have outdone themselves in terms of quality and detail with these figures.

There are also non-Sideshow items brought to you instead by McFarlane and Kotobukiya, which can be found in the AvP section of CmdStore.com. There you’ll find everything from 6-inch figures to Head-knockers and more! Sure to please any fan of the films or their now-classic aesthetic.

And now, in other alien-related news, there’s a new movie coming out that looks like it’s going to be absolutely terrifying. Titled ‘The Fourth Kind’, it’s a creepy tale of alien abduction unlike any other entry to the genre thus far.

Sideshow’s Indiana Jones Collection

October 23, 2009

Indiana Jones was, is and will forever be one of the most awesome adventurers ever created. Harrison Ford has taken a ton of great roles and brought to life dozens of complex characters, but along with Rick Deckard and Han Solo, Henry “Indiana” Jones leads the pack. That’s why the folks at Sideshow have created a collection of 12-inch Indiana Jones figures that are now available over on CmdStore.com whether they’re in-stock or only on pre-order. We’ve got two figurs of Indy himself, Ernst Toht and Rene Beloqq.

Four of the figures are already ready to be snagged by fans, but you’ll have to pre-order if you want to get your hands on the upcoming Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull Indy or the devious Ernst Toht standalone figure. Check out the latter below:

More Zombies! Resident Evil, Marvel, Sideshow and more!

October 19, 2009

I think I’ve got the Halloween spirit. So here, right on the heels of the previous zombie post, here’s a look at some of the awesome zombie toys and figures you’ll find over at CmdStore.com.

First off is the Sideshow series ‘The Dead’. Four 12-inch figures strong, the prophet, the tactical containment official (whose zombification spells terrible things for the civilian population), the babysitter and the Christmas-themed mall Santa. Each one features the quality you’d expect from the Sideshow gang and fans of the walking dead will definitely enjoy these.

For those who prefer the usual cast of characters and only dabble in the world of the undead, take a look at the Marvel Zombies line, based on the comic series and brought to you by Marvel Select. Spider-Man looks especially worse for wear here and his compatriots don’t fare much better. Each one come with a sculpted base featuring a piece of the dismembered Silver Surfer.

Back to more traditional zombies, here’s the trio from Attack of the Living Dead. Some of the goriest figures around, they’re sure to please any fan of the more visceral zombie flicks out there. These guys are the stuff of nightmares.

Finally, the world of video games has seen a massive increase in the number of zombie-based stories, but few have done it better than or for as long as Resident Evil. Both the protagonists and antagonists are engaging, the tales they tell complex and the world wide and immersive. No matter what your console, chances are there’s a Resident Evil for you.

Benicio Del Toro as The Wolf Man : New Figures!

October 18, 2009

Noted awesome guy Benicio Del Toro’s next role onscreen will be in 2010’s The Wolf Man, a remake of the Lon Cheney original that’s sure to show a new generation what classic horror movies once brought to the table. And give Benicio fans (like me) a chance to see him take on a role unlike any he’s ever played.

And I’m more than pleased (and more than excited) to say it’s also going to be a treat for the toy collector in me, because the folks at Mezco, who previously brought us an incredible line from Hellboy and Hellboy II (as well as comic and series based figures), are releasing two Wolf Man figures featuring the awesome makeup designs by the legendary Rick Baker (look him up, you’re almost guaranteed to know at least some of his work!). There’s a 6-inch model and a 12-inch as well and both look spectacular. Check ‘em out over at CmdStore’s Wolfman section or click the pic below!

Naruto Action Figures and PVC Figurines

October 13, 2009

Naruto is one of the many animes to make its way across the ocean and find a place in the hearts and minds of audiences across North America. And with the coming of such shows, there is bound to be the coming of merchandise.

Fortunately, given the oft-discerning tastes of anime fans when it comes to the particular look of the series, the merchandise is generally of a very high quality and the Naruto figures we’ve got over at CmdStore.com are no exception. Each one is brilliantly designed and sculpted, ranging in size from 3 to 12 inches and fully capturing the awesome dynamism of the hit show!

Check out Naruto and Deidara in the first series of new toys already available for pre-order!

They’ll soon be joined by Gaara, Kakashi, Itachi and Sasuke, all of which’ll be shipping later down the line but can already be pre-ordered.

NECA Cult Classics: The ICONIC Series

October 13, 2009

For a film to go from mere cult hit to a true cult classic, it doesn’t have to win any popularity contests, nor does it have to creep its way into the mainstream. Rather, the test that will determine the films that can call themselves true “cult classics” is the test of time. In ten years, will its fans still embrace it with the same fervour? Twenty years? Thirty? Films like Evil Dead, Gremlins, Flash Gordon and a host of others seemed to already have cemented their place in the annals of cult film history, but we can look forward to a future of many more fringe movies kept alive by fans.

And of course, when fans want to keep something alive, it isn’t only the production and distribution companies that respond: the toy-makers get involved, too! Which means that action figure lines like NECA’s Cult Classic collection probably won’t be slowing down anytime soon!

So far, they’ve already released more than eight sets of toys, ranging from characters like American Psycho’s Patrick Bateman and Silence of the Lambs’ Hannibal Lecter to Die Hard’s John McClane and the eponymous Shaun of the Dead. But now, over at CmdStore.com, you can find the latest sets of toys, plus a brand new series available for pre-order!

The new group of figures is known as “The Iconic Series” and for good reason: here are five characters who have not only withstood the test of time, but have become a part of a lexicon beyond that of film students or superfans. Even those less than crazy about non-mainstream film will definitely be familiar with these five: a Gremlin (Brain), Hellraiser’s Pinhead, Halloween’s Michael Myers, Beetlejuice and The Crow’s Eric Draven. For those merely seeking their favourite, these 6-inch figures can be purchased individually, but collectors can also pick ‘em up as a set. Just click the link below to take a look!
