Bryan Singer returns to new ‘X-Men: First Class’ film

December 31, 2009

Bryan SingerDirector Bryan Singer sent the film blogosphere spinning when he let slip that he would be directing “X-Men: First Class.”

“I just signed yesterday to do an ‘X-Men: First Class’ origins picture,” Singer said. “Which is kind of cool. I’m very excited.”

Film bloggers had been speculating for months whether Singer would indeed return to “X-Men,” after helming the first two chapters in the blockbuster franchise. Producer Lauren Shuler-Donner left a press conference for the Blu-ray launch of “X-Men Origins: Wolverine” buzzing in anticipation when she mentioned talks were indeed underway in getting Singer back.

I was very disappointed with the X-Men 3 movie directed by Brett Radner (Rush Hour).  It will be nice to have Bryan back for this origins movie.

What is the X-Men: First Class storyline?

Here is a quick rundown taken from the Marvel Universe site…..Under a cloud of increasing anti-mutant sentiment, Professor Xavier created a safe haven at his Westchester mansion where he could train young mutants to use their powers for the betterment of mankind. Aided by F.B.I. agent Fred Duncan, Xavier spent months recruiting his early students (code-named Cyclops, Iceman, Angel, Beast and Marvel Girl), dubbing them “X-Men” because each possessed an “extra” ability normal humans lacked. The X-Men made their public debut by thwarting Magneto’s seizure of the Cape Citadel missile base. The U.S. military was grateful, and the youngsters were initially regarded as heroes. Magneto would battle the X-Men repeatedly over the years, sometimes leading his Brotherhood of Evil Mutants. The X-Men also battled such threats as the immovable Blob, the untouchable Unus, the alien Lucifer, the savage Swamp Men, the enigmatic Stranger, the unstoppable Juggernaut, and the giant mutant-hunting Sentinel robots.

Robert Pattinson wants to play X-Men’s Magneto

December 31, 2009

Robert Pattinson Comicbookmovie.com reports Robert Pattinson dreams of playing one of the most well-known comic book characters. When asked if he ever thought about playing a superhero on film, the Twilight Saga: Eclipse actor said, “Well yeah, I think everyone wonders about that sometimes.”

But don’t count on the British actor to take on the Man of Steel or the Caped Crusader costume anytime soon. Pattinson would rather be on the dark side, playing the X-Men’s most famous nemesis Magneto. “My little cousin tells me I look like Magneto so I guess thats who I should probably play,” he added.   Young Sherlock….Young Indiana Jones…..Young Magneto?  It could work.

We have tons of different Magneto figures but we also have Robert Pattinson as Edward in Twlight New Moon.

Wonder Woman to be renumbered in 2010

December 26, 2009

Wonder Woman 600 Cover
Continuing its promised pattern of major announcements for 2010, DC Comics’ The Source blog just broke the story that Wonder Woman will be getting renumbered in May 2010. Readers may remember the challenge that DC Comics Executive Editor Dan Didio gave a few months back, asking for fans of Wonder Woman to send him a postcard if they want Wonder Woman, which is currently on #38 of its third ongoing volume, to reflect the numbering if the title had never been relaunched in the 1980s or earlier this decade. If Didio received 600 postcards by October 31 this year, DC would renumber Wonder Woman in 2010 in time for the 600th issue of her own title.

The announcement came with hints at further announcements about Wonder Woman on the horizon in early 2010, and the cover illustration to Wonder Woman #600 by fan-favorite artist and architect behind Wonder Woman’s current incarnation, George Perez.

Fall of the Hulks

December 26, 2009

Article by Chris Nikolopoulos (Montreal Comic Book Examiner)

In May of 1962, the world got its first taste of the Incredible Hulk, created by legends Stan Lee and Jack Kirby. Dr. Bruce Banner, showered by gamma radiation, became one of the most iconic characters in comic book history. For decades, the Hulk wreaked havoc in the Marvel Universe, particularly within himself. For years, he was on his own.

Today, it’s an entirely different situation. Walking around the world, and even in other parts of the universe, are Hulk-related beings. To be more specific, there are 8. One is a cousin, another one’s a best friend, two of them are Hulk’s children, and two are still unknown. Marvel Comics is set to begin another big Hulk event called “Fall of the Hulks,” a story in the making since 2006’s “Planet Hulk.”

It’s safe to say that some people might be a little mixed up. This article is for them. This is a quick rundown on where these Hulks come from and where they stand now.

HULK: Dr. Bruce Banner was showered by gamma radiation and became the Hulk. For many years, he was alone. Right now, he’s been deprived from turning into the Hulk by his most recent of enemies, the Red Hulk. Right now, as Bruce Banner, he’s trying to teach his son, Skaar, how to kill the Hulk should Banner ever turn into the jolly green giant again.

SHE-HULK: Jennifer Walters is Banner’s cousin who needed a blood transfusion after a car accident. Bruce was the only family available to give it to her, and thus, she has his radioactive blood inside her, turning her into She-Hulk. She is also a lawyer, often representing the super-human community. Right now, she is MIA since Incredible Hulk #600, and is presumed dead.

RED HULK: Red Hulk, or Rulk for short, is a creation of Gen. Thunderbolt Ross and M.O.D.O.K. as part of the Gamma Power Super Soldier Program. They successfully create a more cunning and calculating Hulk than the original. Unlike the green Hulk, who becomes stronger the angrier he gets, Rulk emits strong levels of heat with rage. His human alter ego remains a mystery to those in the story and the readers, as well.

RED SHE-HULK: Very little is known about Red She-Hulk. Much like her male counterpart, her identity is still a mystery. She possesses super strength, invulnerability, and a strong healing factor that even survived an attack from mutant Wolverine.

SKARR: During the “Planet Hulk” event, Hulk married Caiera and had a child. That child is Skaar, a savage in his own right. After being banished from his home planet, Sakaar, by his mother’s spirit, Skaar came to earth to kill his father, the Hulk. When Banner was depowered and no longer able to turn into his big ol’ green self, he decided to train Skaar on how to kill the Hulk, should his Hulking powers ever return.

A-BOMB: Rick Jones is the reason why Bruce Banner became the Hulk. Banner saved the teenager from a gamma bomb testing, but absorbed all the radiation himself, turning him into the Hulk. Rick stuck around to help Banner deal with the monster inside him. Throughout the years, Rick has been one of Marvel’s most important sidekicks, assisting other heroes such as Captain America, the Avengers, and both Captain Mar-Vell and his son Captain Marvel. Much like Red Hulk, Jones is experimented on by M.O.D.O.K. and Gen. Ross, who turn him into A-Bomb, a new version of one of Hulk’s biggest enemies, Abomination. With much of his intelligence intact, A-Bomb is now helping Banner “raise” his son, Skaar.

LYRA (SAVAGE SHE-HULK): Lyra is the genetically engineered daughter of Hulk and Thundra from another reality. When her people were at risk of extinction, she was brought to the main Marvel Universe (Earth-616) to prevent that. Unlike her “father,” the angrier Lyra gets, the weaker she becomes. She-Hulk and she struck up a friendship, in which Lyra was being helped into adapting to her new world. Now, Lyra is out looking for her friend, who is missing.

With all these Hulks running around, nobody knows what to expect and how dangerous their powerful unpredictability can be. Unfortunately for all these Hulks, M.O.D.O.K. has been a part of a cabal of villains that also include the Leader, Doctor Doom, Mad Thinker, Egghead, Wizard, and Red Ghost. All these other villains got their hands on the knowledge M.O.D.O.K. used to create Red Hulk. They plan to use this knowledge to begin the “Fall of the Hulks.” The event will be written by Jeph Loeb, Greg Pak, and Jeff Parker, while the art is from Ed McGuinness, Paul Pelletier, and John Romita, Jr..

Here is a checklist of the issues that tie-in to this event (December 2009 to April 2010)
Fall of the Hulks: Alpha (One-Shot)
Fall of the Hulks: Gamma (One-Shot)
Hulk #19-22
Incredible Hulk #606-609
Red Hulk #01-04
The Savage She-Hulks #01-02

Green Hornet Movie release date is set

December 26, 2009

The Green Hornet was created by George W. Trendle and Fan Striker in 1931. The difference with this hero is that he wasn’t created for a comic book before it went on to other forms of entertainment. It was first created for a radio program that ran on WXYZ, a local Detroit radio station.

The Green Hornet is Britt Reid, a newspaper publisher by day and a masked vigilante by night. He’s assisted by his sidekick Kato, who is also Britt’s chauffeur, bodyguard, and valet. Green Hornet also drives his own vehicle called the Black Beauty, his own version of the Batmobile.

Throughout its existence, the Green Hornet radio series has been incarnated into film, television, and comics by many different people; comic book publishers such as Harvey Comics, Dell Comics, Gold Key Comics, and NOW Comics have released many titles featuring the Green Hornet’s adventures. The latest adaptation has been released by Dynamite Entertainment, a mini-series written by Kevin Smith in which he tells a story based on an abandoned film script he wrote in 2004.

In 2008, Sony Pictures Entertainment announced that, through Columbia Pictures, they will release a Green Hornet film. Seth Rogen was signed to write the screenplay with Evan Goldberg. Seth was also cast for the lead role as Britt Reid/Green Hornet. His valet Kato will be played by Taiwanese singer/actor Jay Chou. Christophe Waltz will play the villain Chudnofsky, an original villain created for the film. Cameron Diaz has also been cast to play Britt’s fellow-reporter and love interest. Her character’s name has yet to be announced. Edward Furlong will play a character named Tupper. Other unspecified roles will be played by Edward James Olmos, Tom Wilkinson, and David Harbour.

The film will be produced by Neal H. Moritz for Sony Pictures Entertainment, distributed by Columbia Pictures, and the film will be directed by French director Michel Gondry. “The Green Hornet” is set for a December 22nd, 2010 release.

Peter Jackson to adapt Sci-Fi series (Mortal Engines)

December 26, 2009

Article by KATIE CHAPMAN – The Dominion Post

Peter Jackson is secretly working to adapt the Mortal Engines fantasy novels for the screen.

The hush-hush project is understood to be in early development, with work on the first of the four books under way, industry sources say.

Weta Workshops is also believed to be working on designs for the science fiction series, which features giant mobile cities.

A spokesman for Jackson did not deny the project was on the books yesterday, but said “any comment should come from Peter”.

Jackson, who is understood to have had the rights to the books for some time, was unavailable for comment.

The books, by Philip Reeve, are set in a post-apocalyptic world where cities have become giant vehicles and must consume each other to survive. Mortal Engines is the first book in the series, and has won a Nestle Smarties Book Prize and was shortlisted for the 2002 Whitbread Award.

The fantasy books are the latest in a series of adaptation projects Jackson has taken on.

His film adaptation of The Lovely Bones premiered in Wellington last week, and he is producing The Hobbit – the prequel to his highly successful Lord of the Rings trilogy – and Steven Spielberg’s version of the Belgian comic The Adventures of Tintin: The Secret of the Unicorn.

Jackson has also optioned the rights to the historic-fantasy Temeraire novels, which tell an alternative version of the Napoleonic Wars where tame dragons are used for aerial attacks.

I just started reading the first book and will review it in a later blog.  I am quite fascinated with the concepts in the book. Just imagine for a moment….a far-future age where cities move about hunting smaller mobile towns and dismantling those they catch for their raw materials….pretty interesting.

Green Lantern release date set for Ryan Reynolds film

December 26, 2009

Ryan Reynolds as Green lantern

Green Lantern’s release date has been announced, with Ryan Reynolds as the star. Ryan Reynolds as Green Lantern sounds like a great match on paper, and after his turn in the X-Men series, it seems Reynolds is made for this world of films. With the starring role in Green Lantern though, Ryan Reynolds could be placing himself squarely on the A-list of actors.

The Green Lantern release date is scheduled for June 17, 2011, so it is still a bit of a ways off, but that doesn’t mean the buzz can’t get started. The film is supposed to go into principal photography and begin shooting within about four months, and that will give producers plenty of time to create an epic super hero film. Green Lantern always seemed like one of those super hero movies that couldn’t be made into a live action version, but it seems they are about to make it a reality.

Martin Campbell (Casino Royale) is on board to be the director of Green Lantern, and right now Ryan Reynolds is the only big name star attached to the project. That will certainly change as filming get closer to taking place (read below). That only minor details about the script have been released, really shows that they have a lot of faith in Ryan Reynolds being able to pull off the role of Hal Jordan (Green Lantern). This just makes the year even better for Ryan Reynolds, who recently married (uber Hot)  Scarlett Johansson and seems to be box office gold. He is coming off two high grossing films with Wolverine and a romantic comedy with Sandra Bullock. Now it seems like the sky isn’t the limit for Ryan Reynolds, as he seeks to take on the role of an out-of-this-world super hero.

Blake Lively in Green Lantern? In additional to Van Wilder getting the lead role, Gossip Girl actress Blake Lively might also be casted in the Green Lantern movie. The 22-year-old blonde star is being lined-up to play the love interest of the main character Hal Jordan – who is played by Ryan Reynolds.

However, Blake reportedly faces stiff competition for the part as Jennifer Garner, Diane Kruger and Eva Green are also in the running.

A source said: “Blake would be amazing in this role. She has a busy 2010 promoting The Town, but she would love to play a part in a superhero film.”  I like Blake…she is hot!

Taylor Lautner flaunts rippling 8-pack in Twilight New Moon

December 26, 2009

Taylor Lautner shirtless

Twilight hunk Taylor Lautner, who worked out nonstop to gain 30 pounds of muscle for sequel New Moon, is embarrassed by the media attention surrounding his ripped physique.

“It’s actually quite uncomfortable knowing so many people are seeing that!” Lautner, 17, tells Us. “It’s a little bit embarrassing!”

Taylor credits working out and eating around the clock for the rippling 8-pack abs he flaunts in New Moon. Gaining weight was “a lot of hard work,” says Lautner. “[It was all about] eating, working out – a lot of stuff.”

For Twilight’s next two sequels–Eclipse and Breaking Dawn–Taylor must add even more weight to his naturally lanky frame. [Editor's note: In the book, Jacob morphs from a baby-faced 6'2" teen to a monstrous 6'7" werewolf.]

“Jacob continually grows throughout the series, so I’m still going to have to put on a little bit more weight,” says Taylor.

Lautner is currently in Vancouver with co-stars Robert Pattinson and Kristen Stewart, filming Eclipse. “We are having a lot of fun hanging out in Vancouver,” says Lautner. “It’s really good.”

Twilight has flexed some serious box-office muscles, having grossed over $384 million worldwide since its release last fall while the sequel (New Moon) has grossed over $677 million worldwide so far.

James Cameron, fan get in argument over ‘Avatar’ autograph

December 25, 2009

james cameronJames Cameron and one of his fans weren’t exactly full of holiday cheer on Wednesday night; rather, they chose to fling a few choice words at each other after a dispute over an autograph.

Here’s pretty much what happened: a fan approached the Oscar-winning director at LAX in hopes of getting his “Avatar” poster autographed; when Cameron turned it down, saying “he didn’t owe” the fan a signature, that’s where the fan goes ballistic. He accuses the director of not caring about his fans, and then goes on a tirade talking about how he paid $15 to see “Avatar” and can’t even get a signature in return.

Of course, there’s a chance that this guy was making the entire story up to sell the poster online; either way, should a director be obligated to sign the poster for a “fan?” Check out the video here (with a warning for language) and let me know what you think!
