I do not agree with the 'high expectations killing TPM' way of explaining why the Star Wars prequels are 'better'.
I wasn't expecting a lot, and I got LESS when watching the new trilogy. I don't know many people who actually liked them except for the (at the time) 12 year old brother of my ex gf.

I still think the original Star Wars is one of the greatest stories ever told and with a soundtrack that'll be heard until the end of our civilization.
Vader by James Earl Jones is the number one movie villain of all time as far as I am concerned. I actually spent money on renting the story about his emotional growth and childhood intermixed with 'funny long eared aliens making stupid jokes'.
I liked Ewan McGregor though. But that's just because he's an awesome actor. He couldn't save these movies.

Bravo! Exactly what I've been trying to say for weeks! Star Trek was just a cheap excuse to sell MORE Star Trek stuff. And of course, it had to be bigger, louder, deadlier, but with less brains. It absolutely took no risks.... Yet, TPM did take risks. There was no Darth Vader, practically no original characters, the effects were unprecidented at the time, not to mention it practically INVENTED the term "Prequal."
