Geeking out on Twitter!

Geeking out on Twitter!

If you follow the latest in internet trends, you’ve undoubtedly heard of Twitter and you might just have one of your own. Essentially, Twitter is social networking and blogging filtered down to its purest form: every update you make or read must be 140 characters or less in length and answer the question “What are you doing?”

It might not sound like much right now, but it’s big! So big, in fact, that it’s caught the attention of some very noteworthy people–some of them very popular in the world of Geekery (and beyond!) Now, we at CMDStore are already on Twitter (follow our ‘Tweets’ at http://www.twitter.com/CMDStore for updates), but here’s a list of some other Twitters you might want to check out to get your 140-character doses of sci-fi, superheroes, film and TV and more!

- Stephen Fry might be familiar to fans of British comedy or British actors in general, but he’s also an absolutely massive techno-geek who was an early joiner to Twitter and updates frequently from both his iPhone and laptop about the latest technology, his incredible world travels and…everything else you could imagine! He updates all the time and is always a treat to read. Find him at http://www.twitter.com/stephenfry

- Bears. Beets. Battlestar Galactica. Dwight Shrute might not be the spokesperson the geek community wants, but the actor who plays him on NBC’s The Office is nevertheless beloved by fans and you can find him on twitter right here Twitter.com/Rainnwilson.

- Mythbusters fan? If you’ve enjoyed watching Adam Savage and Jamie Hyneman go to great lengths (explosions, deep-sea dives, firewalking, vodka-making, partying with a ninja, trying to get a duck’s quack to echo, racing, filling a car with dead pigs…to name a few) to bust myths on their popular Discovery TV Show, you might want to check out Adam Savage’s Twitter, appropriately named “Don’t try this”.

- Star Trek: The Next Generation brought new popularity to the waning Star Trek franchise and created a fanbase so large, no one could have foreseen its popularity or its scope. And now three of its stars are tweeting! You can find Brent Spiner (Data), LeVar Burton (Geordie La Forge–or the host of Reading Rainbow!) and Wil Wheaton (the much-maligned Wesley Crusher) all updating regularly about their lives and all things related to new projects. Wheaton also has a lot to say about D&D, video games and books/film he recommends.

- Greg Grunberg is a name familiar to fans of NBC’s Heroes, where he plays Matt Parkman, a police officer with the power to read minds. Like most, he tweets about everything, but Heroes viewers will be especially pleased with the exclusive behind-the-scenes content and spoiler-hinting to be found by keeping up with the actor.

- No stranger to internet forums and often a surprisingly strong presence in even the smallest fan circles, Warren Ellis is also Tweeting! The comic book writer generally updates about his days, but you can bet there are some great recommendations and some up-to-date information on future projects from the writer of Transmetropolitan, Jack Cross, Doktor Sleepless and more!

- Fans of Joss Whedon’s supehero/sci-fi musical Dr. Horrible’s Sing-Along Blog were re-introduced to Felicia Day (after some other Whedon appearances!) when she starred as love interest, Penny. But she was already big in the geek community as part of World of Warcraft’s The Guild and her reviews of novels, film and television. Definitely worth checking out, she shows that some of the biggest geeks out there today are girls.

- Finally, something a little different. For fans of fantasy, sci-fi and horror (and especially the combination of two or more of those!), look no further than Creepypasta, a Twitter that will keep you up to date on all kinds of spooky media, from film and television to the internet horror microfiction that bears its name!

Keep on tweetin’!

Martin Brodeur hits All-Time Wins as Devils Goalie

March 20, 2009

Martin Brodeur New Jersey Devils

As the son of the Montreal Canadiens’ official photographer, Martin Brodeur grew up idolizing the Habs.

And nowhere was this love for the hometown team more evident than in the spring of 1986, when he and a friend rode their bikes for an hour to downtown Montreal to celebrate the club’s 23rd Stanley Cup.

As the parade of convertible cars made their way down St. Catherine’s Street, the crowd cheered for their heroes of the day. There was captain Bob Gainey, star defenceman Larry Robinson, high-scoring winger Mats Naslund and young players like Brian Skrudland and Claude Lemieux.

But the biggest star in that improbable championship was a lanky 21-year goaltender named Patrick Roy, a cocky youngster who had yet to discover how much of an impact he would have on the game.

No one knew yet about the level of greatness that Roy would later achieve, and how a young boy admiring him from afar would join – and one day surpass that very same level.

On March 17, Brodeur – a career goaltender for the New Jersey Devils and a surefire Hall of Famer – added a significant record to his NHL resume, becoming the NHL’s career wins leader and passing childhood hero Roy with 552 victories.

The 36-year-old has been chasing Roy’s many records since he broke into the NHL in 1992, and any way you slice it – the two goaltending legends will alway be measured against one another.

Martin Brodeur McFarlane Sports FigureBrodeur will be remembered as a calm, collected goaltender who is rarely fazed, while Roy’s fiery, win-at-all costs attitude has him revered by many as one of the most competitive players the game has ever seen. While Brodeur has four Vezina trophies and three Stanley Cups on his resume, Roy will go down as arguably the game’s top playoff performer with three Conn Smythe trophies to prove it.

Patrick Roy - Martin BrodeurRoy also holds the record of 13 seasons with 30 or more wins. That’s one more than Brodeur, whose string of 12 in a row will end this season because he missed most the campaign with a torn biceps muscle that kept him out for 50 games.

While Brodeur holds the record for most 40-win seasons with seven, Roy still leads in combined regular-season and playoff wins with 702 (compared to 644 for Brodeur). The comparisons are endless, but both goaltenders will always come out as winners – with a bond that began more than two decades ago during a Stanley Cup parade in Montreal.

WATCHMEN: Video games and new figures!

March 13, 2009

For fans of Capcom’s old side-scrolling brawlers, check out this Veidt co. Watchmen game featuring two of the Minutemen: Silk Spectre I and Nite Owl I. It’s totally 80s/90s styled despite its ’1977′ date, but either way it’s a heck of a lot of fun. It was part of the original promotional material for the film (along with things like the previously posted video games and the official site of The New Frontiersman. If you’re looking for a great way to kill some time, click the screenshot to head over to the Minutemen Arcade game.

This may be the spiritual predecessor to the WATCHMEN: THE END IS NIGH console game and the recently-released WATCHMEN: JUSTICE IS COMING for the iPhone and iPod Touch.

For more Watchmen merch, we just got a shipment of variants for both The Comedian and Dr. Manhattan. The former is Edward Blake’s Comedian before he donned the mask to cover the scar that marred his features and the latter is a transparent version of Dr. Manhattan, giving him a glow (if making him less suitable for 1980s television).

Filene’s Basement 20% off Coupon

March 8, 2009

Here is a non-related toy item for you serious bargain shoppers….with the economy going down the drain, every little bit helps. I have included a coupon that is good for 20% off any one item from Filene’s Basement good until March 15th 2009. I don’t get anything out of it…I am just sharing it so we can all contribute and improve the economy.  I believe that this poor economy is caused by people’s fear and the media.  We need to continue spending (within reason) and keep this economy chugging along.

Just click the image and then save it to your computer so you can print it later. I used this exact coupon this past weekend (March 7th) and it worked like a charm at the Union Square location in New York City.

Later, I was walking around Greenwich Village (after getting my slice of pizza from Joe’s) and kept on stepping on dog pooh.  Hey, New Yorkers…don’t you pick up your dog crap?  Mmm…eating my cheese slice with dog pooh under my Rockports…it gives me goose bumps thinking about it.

By the way, I love NYC (even with all the crap lying around).  If anyone has any comments about this, please feel free to fire them off below.

WATCHMEN OPENS TODAY!

March 6, 2009

Though there were tons of people present at the midnight showings, most are headed to catch Snyder’s epic take on Alan Moore’s WATCHMEN starting today. The reviews so far have been overwhelmingly positive, with even fans of the graphic novel seeming pleased with the adaptation (if only for the fact that they can finally see their favourite characters come to life on the silver screen). And to celebrate the opening in London, there was an awesome promotional event not unlike that which accompanied last summer’s Dark Knight Alternate-reality Game. Check it out!

That’s Dr. Manhattan, standing 70 feet tall over the River Thames thanks to the world’s largest water projector. He’s quickly followed by the iconic bloodied happy face pin once worn by The Comedian. An since WATCHMEN has only just opened, you can bet there’ll be more awesome opening nights, including displays and costumes, and I’ll be sure to include the best of it right here.

The Green Lantern: FIRST FLIGHT Movie DVD

March 4, 2009

Though shows like the original Spider-Man, the 90s X-Men cartoon and even Iron Man are fondly remembered by many, the biggest and brightest star of the superhero genre was undoubtedly Batman: The Animated Series. It stood apart from the others with its heavily stylized art-deco-cum-neo-gothic look, sharp, intelligent writing, powerful new takes on well-known characters and inspired voice casting from Kevin Conroy’s alternately light and dark Bruce/Batman and Mark Hamill’s manic and theatrical Joker to Michael Ansara’s striking turn as Mr. Freeze.

After B:TAS, there came The New Batman Adventures, JLA, Batman Beyond and more, all in a similar style (with many redesigns) and taking place in a single epic universe. Now, the success of those shows and feature-length films like Mask of the Phantasm, Sub Zero and Batman Beyond: The Return of the Joker has paved the way for new films like Wonder Woman, released March 3rd. And next up, it has been announced, is the Hal Jordan origin story The Green Lantern: First Flight!

The first trailer was shown at WonderCon and the movie will be released June 28th, 2009 on DVD and Blu-Ray, which will feature over three hours of extra content, commentaries and a digital copy. Plus, the legendary Bruce Timm has selected two of The Green Lantern’s finest episodes of Justice League to be included on the Blu-Ray edition.

Watchmen Motion Comic Books is taking Over

March 3, 2009

Watchmen Smiley Face

Watchmen is a 2009 film adaptation of Alan Moore and Dave Gibbons’ limited comic book series Watchmen, directed by Zack Snyder. The film stars Patrick Wilson, Jackie Earle Haley, Malin Akerman, Billy Crudup, Jeffrey Dean Morgan, Matthew Goode, Stephen McHattie, and Carla Gugino. Set in 1985, the film follows a group of former vigilantes as war begins to break out between the United States and the Soviet Union.

Watchmen is also a 12-issue comic book limited series written by Alan Moore and illustrated by Dave Gibbons. Originally published by DC Comics as a monthly limited series from 1986 to 1987, it was later republished as a trade paperback, which popularized the “graphic novel” format. To date, Watchmen remains the only graphic novel to win a Hugo Award, and is also the only graphic novel to appear on Time Magazine’s 2005 list of “the 100 best English-language novels from 1923 to the present.”

I read the graphic novel a while back and I see that there is an Motion Comic Book of the Watchmen from iTunes available now.

What is a motion comic book? It’s a new concept taken on by the comic book publishers to expand into a different media format.   It is a sort of hybrid between full animation and static comic panels, with added sound effects and voiceovers.

What does a motion comic book look like? It is pretty cool…I highly recommend this new media format.  Below is a youtube preview trailer of the Watchmen Motion Comic Book….check it out and let me know what you think.

We received a shipment of the Watchmen 13 inch figures (Dr Manhattan and Comedian) released by DC Direct.  You can buy them off our website at www.cmdstore.com

Bakugan Video Game: Xbox, Playstation, Nintendo Wii

March 1, 2009

I found the following news article posted on PRNewsire about Bakugan Video Games:

SANTA MONICA, Calif., Feb. 24 /PRNewswire-FirstCall/ – Activision Publishing, Inc. (Nasdaq: ATVI) announced today an agreement with Corus Entertainment Inc.’s Nelvana Enterprises to develop and distribute video games based on the breakout hit toy and wildly popular action animated television series Bakugan. The first Bakugan game will be released for Wii(TM), Nintendo DS(TM), Xbox 360(R) video game and entertainment system from Microsoft, and PLAYSTATION(R)3 and PlayStation(R)2 computer entertainment systems in the fall of 2009.

“Bakugan’s success in 2008 speaks for itself and we’re confident it will be even bigger in 2009,” said David Oxford, Activision Publishing. “It is our goal to expand this proven property in a way that both fans and gamers will love.”

“Ever since Bakugan exploded in popularity, players have been clamoring for a video game version,” said Doug Murphy, President, Nelvana and GM, Corus Kids. “We share our fans’ excitement in doing battle in an interactive Bakugan world!”

Bakugan tells the story of Dan and his friends as they battle their Bakugan Brawlers to save the planet of Vestroia and, ultimately, Earth from destruction. The series airs on Cartoon Network in the United States and internationally, and on TELETOON in Canada. The toy line, developed by Spin Master Ltd., brings action to the popular genre of collectible trading card games with marble-like Bakugan spheres that transform into “battle brawling” action figures when rolled onto special game cards. A genuine toy craze in the 2008 holiday season, Bakugan recently won three “Toy of the Year” awards from The Toy Industry Association: overall Toy of the Year, Boy Toy of the Year, and Property of the Year.

The video games, under development by veteran Japanese studio NOW Production, will render the elements that made Bakugan a worldwide phenomenon into mind-blowing digital experiences. Everything a Bakugan enthusiast and gamer would love is here – intense battles, the ability to create your own Brawler, cartoon quality graphics and multiplayer combat.
