Most Popular Bakugan is….Double Side Headed Preyas II or Dragonoid

I was bored this past weekend working in the store…..I was wondering what I could talk about on the blog….my mind was a blank. Then a kid asked me an question that I heard about a hundred times while working:

Mister….What is the most popular Bakugan?

Mmm…I told the young man, “Good question, my little grasshopper….let me think about it.” Certain bakugan creatures gain popularity and then another one comes along to eclipse it. Clearly, Dragonoid is the best selling bakugan from the beginning. We have probably sold over 826 Dragonoids over the past year (yes…I have actual stats of it in our computer system). I am a “stats guy” that manages a Rotisserie fantasy baseball team and can recall players stats with extreme accuracy but I digress.

Lately we have been getting a lot of request for the Double Side Preyas II (also called Double Head Preyas II). I would say this is the most popular bakugan right now.

Counting Down: WATCHMEN figures, Series 1!

Some fans can’t wait, others dread the inevitable changes to their comic bible, and a great many more will be introduced to the characters and the events in Alan Moore’s WATCHMEN for the first time on March 6th. The movie stars Patrick Wilson as Nite Owl II, Malin Ackerman as Silk Spectre II, Jackie Earle-Haley as fan-favourite Rorschach, Jeffrey Dean Morgan as The Comedian and more equally spot-on casting choices complete the ensemble.

Naturally, with something like this coming up, DC Direct has been working on a line of merch suitable to the tastes and high expectations of WATCHMEN fans everywhere. They’ve got busts and statues, 13 inch figures and 6 inch figures, all of which look great (though I personally prefer the detail on the smaller ones). Check ‘em out!

The NEW YORK COMIC CON

This year, the New York Comic Con attracted 77,000 people, up a whole 10,000 from the 2008 show. On Saturday, it was actually sold out and–trust me–the place was absolutely packed with people. And it didn’t help that there was a Travel Show taking up the other half of the building, so that any legroom NYCC needed wasn’t available. So while it was a little hot and sticky as we rubbed shoulders (and the rest of our bodies) with Batmen, Hellboys, Rorschachs, Poison Ivies and more Jedis than you can shake a stick at, a good time was definitely had by all. There were premieres and panels, a ton of comic books for sale, action figures for sale and for show, interactive displays, videogames (including the hugely-anticipated-by-me DCU Online) and a really impressive talent list over in Artists’ Alley.

It was awesome.

Special Attack Bakugan Series

The latest release of the Special Attack Bakugan Series is here and it features some really cool new creatures. The Double Head Preyas Bakugan is my favorite of them all. Every kid is asking for the Double Head Preyas II which features two different G-Power heads. One end will have a 450G power rating and the other side will have a 650G power rating….now isn’t that cool. I love playing with this Double Headed Preyas II creature….most of the kids freak out when they see that it can open up at both ends.

The New York Comic Con Review pt.1- WONDER WOMAN: THE MOVIE

From February 6th to the 8th, New York’s Jacob Javits Convention Center played host to the New York Comic Con, one of the largest pop culture festival/conventions in the United States and an all-around awesome time for fans and professionals alike. I was able to head down there for the weekend and I had a blast.

There was something for everyone: whether you’re a fan of Battlestar Galactica or Buffy the Vampire Slayer (Both Joss Whedon and Tara Strong were present, the former to promote Dollhouse and the latter to promote her novels), Batman or Bakugan, or even something that doesn’t start with a ‘B’, you could find it at the convention. There will be a ton of pics to come, but for the moment, there’s one event that took place on the first night that definitely deserves a mention here and was of huge importance to a ton of fans of a hero who hasn’t gotten her due.

On Friday the 6th, the World Premiere of the new Wonder Woman film went down at the New York Comic Con, hosted by a panel including writer Michael Jelenic, director Lauren Montgomery and the legendary Bruce Timm (best known for his work on Batman: The Animated Series). I had been lucky enough to be given tickets, and to be quite honest, I probably wouldn’t have gone had I not been invited. Wonder Woman is a character who has never been given a definitive origin story, and who has frequently been cast aside while Batman and Superman got the glory.

Well no more!

When I say that this movie is awesome, it’s really an understatement. It’s not only a brilliant take on the origin of Wonder Woman and the Amazons, but it’s a great story that makes the character into a strong, powerful woman without a hint of stereotypical ‘man-hating’, and keeps the idea that she is a fish-out-of-water in the mortal world without falling into naivete. The dialogue is snappy, the action intense (and I mean intense–this is stuff that you don’t usually see in the DCU) and the voice talent is perfect, featuring Keri Russell, fan-fave Nathan Fillion, Oliver Platt and more. Amazing stuff.

The DVD and Blu-Ray are out on March 3rd, 2009, as we were frequently reminded by panel host Greg Noveck (he also offered the handy mnemonic that 03/03/09 can be recalled as ’3×3=9′, so carry that with you).

If you’ve enjoyed the DC Animated series’ and features thus far, you will NOT want to miss this. They have finally done justice to the iconic character. Check it out!

Custom Bakugans on eBay – Real or fakes

Bakugan Battle Brawlers

I am getting a lot of questions from parents concerning customized Bakugans.

What does customized mean?

“Custom Bakugan” means that the G power rating has been altered. It is usually to alter the G power rating higher and allows the bakugan player to win a match with ease. Usually the customizer adds a digit or two in front the existing G power number . I have included some pictures I found on eBay of some examples of custom bakugans.

Can I play with custom bakugans?

No…you cannot use custom bakugans in tournament games. However, you can play with friends at home but it is pretty unfair if you have a customized bakugan with 99,000G power rating creature. Hey, some would consider it cheating.

Should I buy custom Bakugans?

I would not recommend purchasing these modified bakugans as you are paying a premium for a altered item that you cannot use in Tournament play. If you like custom bakugans then simply use “white out” to paint the number you desire.
